Svarichevsky Mikhail's personal blog at 3.14.by covers hardware and science. Since 2009, 16 different Hacker News readers have linked it 23 times, most often “Overclocking Arduino with liquid nitrogen cooling”. The last post was in 2024, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (6) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link this blog's hands-on hardware and computing posts: microscope views of CD/DVD surfaces, homemade CPUs, a Bitfury Bitcoin mining chip, Arduino liquid nitrogen overclocking, and a critique of Google App Engine.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
Theoretically, optical media should be easier to recover than magnetic, because the technology to view their surfaces in detail is readily available --- a light microscope is enough to humanly view the actual recorded data on a CD and even a DVD: https://3.14.by/en/read/cd-dvd-microscope https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8_HCLPdpkI (CD-R) It would be interesting to see what "disc rot" looks like at that level of deta…

HN discussionKind of silly that you wouldn't use MongoDB yet you'd use GAE. GAE is a turd, Google has been struggling to compete in the cloud business and failed to come out with any value. You get locked into a Heroku-like platform with awful performance, awful stability, and arcane quotas. http://www.carlosble.com/2010/11/goodbye-google-app-engine-g... http://3.14.by/en/read/why-google-appengine-sucks

HN discussionIt wouldnt even be hard emulation in a strict sense of the word. 8086 itself is microcoded. Anything from https://3.14.by/en/read/homemade-cpus will be able to run equivalent microcode. https://gigatron.io/ is about 1000 transistors/diodes, totally doable by hand if you are crazy enough.
