Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for DIY biosignal projects (EEG, EKG, EMG), a Wii Balance Board bathroom scale, and linear data smoothing. Most comments are bare links or citations.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Most oximetry is performed optically, actually[1], and it is the technology Apple is drawing from to determine heart rate[2]. It's not difficult to build an oximeter[3], though reliable and calibrated O2 sat[4] numbers may be more challenging to derive from a device in the form factor of a consumer watch. 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_oximetry 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoplethysmogram 3. http://ww…

  3. I have been under the impression that doing this kind of thing is not that difficult (as explained here) but somewhat "dangerous" in that if you get the wiring at all wrong and accidentally apply even a small amount of current you can confuse the heart and get it to damage itself. I do not see any paragraphs here of "dire warning" or even any specific mentions of parts of this process being dangerous, just a comment…

  5. Well, it looks like they vary by -+0.5kg, since this is what I'm doing here: http://www.stavros.io/misc/weight/ That's why I want a smoothing algorithm, but the one I found here[1] is giving me a bit of a problem (I can't see why the data points are being squeezed). 9. Thank you for the link and I need to spend some time to read the details. It was stated in the paper I read that tracking one of the proving flights failed but other flights had data which correlated to part of an aircraft's flight path. I agree with your analysis that some pre-knowledge of the track is apparent here and therefore more fully blinded independent experiments would be needed to add credibility. Given t…
