sylabs.io is the company blog at sylabs.io, writing about programming and systems. Since 2018, 17 different Hacker News readers have linked it 17 times, most often “Singularity – A Container Platform”. No feed was found, so read it on the site itself.
Too few sampled comments (11) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN commenters link sylabs.io for Singularity container guides, a blog post on signed SIF container images, and the homepage. Comments mostly recommend the Singularity software itself rather than judge the writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 11 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
If you're frustrated with Docker's slow pace of development are are looking for a good alternative, have a look at Singularity containers. They're interoperable with Docker Hub and OCI compatible images, and offer a much better experience for HPC, machine learning and big data environments. Their GPU support is top notch. They don't run on as many platforms as Docker, but are aiming to grow into cross-platform. Syla…

HN discussionThe company I work for, Sylabs, is taking what I think to be a pretty great approach to solving this problem. Essentially we've introduced a container image format where the actual runtime filesystem can be cryptographically signed (you can read about that here: https://www.sylabs.io/2018/03/sif-containing-your-containers... ). The Singularity container runtime we develop treats this concept of "end-to-end integrity…

HN discussionI always like to chime in and recommend people check out Singularity[0] containers if they haven't before. It's more common in academia because you can run containers without privileges which is nice in HPC environments. The containers themselves are simple immutable flat files that can be easily copied around, backed up, etc. There's also no system daemon. It's nice knowing everything you need for your container sy…

HN discussion> The user has complete read/write/execute to everything in the 'base' container. Anything bind-mounted in assumes the given privileges from the host system.[0] The user's context is essentially mapped to root inside the container, but not a 'true' root in the context of the host system. Sure, but it's actually much simpler than this. User namespaces allow you to change the UID mapping of users -- and an unprivilege…

HN discussion> and it was then when they came up with a pretty cool name for their new OS — Singularity. Or, it was then when they (intentionally?) ripped off the name of an existing, open source, OS-related project. https://sylabs.io/singularity/

on “Containers are tents”Singularity containers go some way towards running without root, though it defaults to setuid setup at boot and dropping privs before execution. Singularity makes some bad design choices though, like eliminating layers, which results in proliferation of huge container images cluttering everywhere, with no idea what they do. It's really designed for HPC administrators who don't like end users. https://sylabs.io/guide…

on “Rootless Containers”It's great if it works, but there are many cases where you can't just take a Docker container and apply it to work in Singularity. I even found this Blog Post this morning that went into some of it. https://www.sylabs.io/2018/04/singularity-compatibility-with...
