Personal blog · tannr.comhardwareprogramming
Tanner's Website is a personal blog at tannr.com about hardware and programming. Since 2012, 8 different Hacker News readers have linked it 9 times, most often “Herp Derp - A browser extension to protect you from stupidity on YouTube”. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-02-28, and you can follow it by feed.
Too few sampled comments (7) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link this blog mainly for its Herp Derp YouTube Comments browser extension page, which commenters recommend installing to hide YouTube comments; one also links a 2023 post on Doom on a 64x64 LED matrix.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
I like to share my unbridled enthusiasm for technology.

What Hacker News says?
Pretty much everyone who uses the internet, uses YouTube. But the ones who comment on YouTube represent the race to the bottom in terms of quality. The vast majority of internet users watch YouTube videos, but only the vile juvenile trolls and assholes bother to comment. HN discussion> Turn off comments. This is the purpose of one of my favorite browser add-ons: http://www.tannr.com/herp-derp-youtube-comments/ Available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Opera.

HN discussion+1. I don't see why there's so much whining. The YT comments are shit, and you'll be doing yourself a favor installing by a extension like this [1] (which, unfortunately, doesn't work with the new system yet) Doesn't want to comment under your real name for whatever reason (trolling, personal info, fear of being stalked, etc)? Don't comment. Everyone will be better off. [1] http://www.tannr.com/herp-derp-youtube-com…

on “Doom on a modified rotary phone”I agree about youtube comments. To make sure I never actually read them I installed the youtube herp derp extension on all my chrome/firefox browsers. http://www.tannr.com/herp-derp-youtube-comments/

on “The humans who outrun horses”I almost wish it were retroactive, just for the commenter remorse it would cause. Failing that, the Herp Derp YouTube Comments browser extension is easily the best plugin I have installed. http://www.tannr.com/herp-derp-youtube-comments/
