Why HN links it

HN readers link Terraformation's blog and site, which cover solar-powered water desalination and reforestation for ecosystem restoration. One commenter says the posts explain why desalination is needed.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 10 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

Terraformation helps the world restore native forests. We build the tools, train the teams, and prove what restoration at scale really takes.

  3. I'm thinking wildly here and not getting into technicals, but it could also be seen not necessarily for humans but also for ecosystem restoration efforts in harsh remote environments. For example, while I have some viability questions the company Terraformation has been trial'ing photovoltaic solar powered water desalinization (using brackish wells as a source) in deforested areas for water - https://www.terraformat…

  9. I recently listened to the audiobook of How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates. It was a fine tour of the landscape of solutions. My main takeaway is that we're going to need to do a wide variety of things in a wide variety of sectors. He gets into stuff like concrete, which is very important in growth but also big on emissions. With respect to reforestation: Gates says it would help, but possibly not as much…

  10. You should read some of terraformation's blog posts, they're quite sensible and talk about why you need desalination. Tldr, while forests do create their own microclimate, maintaining moisture, etc you need desalination for the first decade or two while the forest boots up. Also, desalination is largely a function of energy, as solar falls in price, so does the cost of desalination. https://terraformation.com/blog/s…

  12. It's also worth asking how desalination can be used in say afforestation or ecosystem restoration, to improve evapotranspiration of water over a landscape where appropriate. I recall the CEO of terraformation (Yishan Wong) talking about using desal with brackish wells : https://www.terraformation.com/blog/solar-powered-desalinati...
