Why HN links it
HN commenters cite aztec.network as an example of a privacy-preserving zero-knowledge rollup on Ethereum, in threads on crypto privacy and layer 2 scaling. None judge the site's writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 12 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Everything you can do on Ethereum - privately. Fully programmable end-to-end privacy is here with private smart contracts.

What Hacker News says?
>Clearly, optional privacy is not privacy at all. This is a marketing term without actual meaning. There's a system with some anonymity. Then there's the external world. There's no 'optional' anonymity. The error lies in incorrectly comparing monero to zcash as a whole, instead of shielded transactions themselves. Names themselves are irrelevant. Depositing xmr to an exchange is equivalent to withdrawing from the an…

HN discussionThe general idea is Layer 2s solve high gas. Most users will be using apps that run on a layer 2 and will make rare trips to the mainnet. The next thing being worked on is onboarding users direct to layer 2, and layer2 interoperability so you can move from one l2 to another You can already use an L2 DEX to exchange tokens (and have been able to for about a year) https://exchange.loopring.io/ You can send L2 payments…

HN discussion> With the recent introduction of zk rollups on Ethereum, it's now possible to have the best of both worlds, in my opinion (see https://aztec.network/index.html ). Transactions that need to be private will be conducted on zero-knowledge rollups built for privacy. Mastercard is working on this with Consensys for Ethereum ( https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/12/16/consensys-colla ...). I can’t find any real techni…

on “Web3 is centralized”> are an absolute boon to tax collectors, forensic accountants and fraudsters Weird that it would be a boon for both forensic accountants and fraudsters. How do you reconcile that sentence? The fact that something is done in public does not mean that it is centralized. There is public and decentralized, public and centralized, private and centralized, and private and decentralized. Decentralization itself, is a spec…

on “Web3 is centralized”Multisigs, permissionless lending, decentralized data storage, automated market makers, social protocols, exchangeable token based authentication, digital content ownership, digital rights management, etc. All of these things already exist on the platform. on “Tim Berners-Lee: Web3 is not the web”The point you are so reluctantly refusing to see is that it is about options and the long tail . Yeah, the majority of business and people are fine with the status quo. It doesn't mean that the rest should just conform. > Other than that, unless you use Nano, every crypto transaction comes with a fee (...) slower than normal transactions - https://raiden.network (near-zero fee transfers, akin to Lightning Network, r…

on “People don't want to run their own bank”Monero can't do smart contracts as far as I know. However there is somewhat of a push to adopt privacy focused zero knowledge rollups, which would preserve privacy while settling on a layer 2: https://aztec.network/

on “Former OpenSea employee charged in digital asset insider trading scheme”The privacy comes from the system being censorship resistant, so the platform itself can not require you to KYC yourself to the state in order to use it, or be shut down or blocked by the state. The irrepudiable public record of transactions is needed to make it censorship resistant, and does indeed come with severe privacy risks, though those can be mitigated with zk-proof cryptography (e.g. https://aztec.network/…

on “EU to make Bitcoin traceable, ban anonymous crypto wallets”Vitalik actually has an excellent blog post on rollups. [1] As well as the Rollup Centric Roadmap posted last year which is a little more technically specific[2]. All the evidence/math is there to read, or in the developer forums. Currently Ethereum has 15 transactions per second. Optimistic rollups can rollup 200 or so transactions per second into each ethereum transaction. Optimistic rollups are launching onto mai…

on “Online card payments still suck”I would just point out zero-knowledge proofs. Magically enough, no, that's not a necessary feature of blockchains. Zcash allows an independent observer to verify that a transaction was authorized and completed. It does this without revealing (a) who the recipient was (b) who the sender was or (c) how much Zcash was sent. Extending this idea to broader use cases: https://aztec.network/
