HN discussionHas Github stated a reason? I read the announcement from Oct. 1 [1] and it doesn't have any explanation outside of a link to a Software Freedom Conservancy [2] (the folks now maintaining Git) A lot of people here are assuming virtue signaling, but it could just as easily be "a majority number of our staff was behind this change". Unless GitHub has stated the why somewhere (I spent ~5m googling to no avail) we simply…

HN discussionI agree that’s a potential concern, but you’re worrying about it a year too late. Individual developers have been able to make repos private on the free plan since January 2019: https://github.blog/2019-01-07-new-year-new-github/ . This announcement only affects the cost of private repos for teams of collaborators.

HN discussion> We’re happy to announce we’re making private repositories with unlimited collaborators available to all GitHub accounts. Huh, I thought github made private repos available to free github accounts a while ago? Looking for historical announcement, aha, it was not with "unlimited collaborators" before. From Jan 2019: > GitHub Free now includes unlimited private repositories. For the first time, developers can use Git…

HN discussiontptacek is using Zed, which I've not tried myself. I actually do most of my "agentic coding" (not a fan of the term, but whatever) in ChatGPT Code Interpreter, which hasn't changed much in two years other than massive upgrades to the model it uses - I run that mainly via o4-mini-high or o3 these days. OpenAI's Codex is a leading new thing, but only if you pay $200/month for it. Google's equivalent https://jules.goog…

HN discussion> It would be cool if GitHub integrated with existing platforms and helped that to happen They did that as well today today with support for a .github/FUNDING.yml. This file lets people provide links to Open Collective, Patreon, Community Bridge, Tidelift, Ko-Fi, a custom link and they show up as alternative sponsoring options for a repo: https://github.blog/2019-05-23-announcing-github-sponsors-a-... .

HN discussion>If Github can start automatically recognizing dependencies I think that they already do this for JavaScript, Ruby, and Python dependencies[0]. However I don't think doing it automatically is the way to go, one dependency may be "worth" way more than another, and some dependencies may go undetected (e.g. if I conditionally sneak -lfoo into my LDLIBS somewhere) [0]: https://github.blog/2017-11-16-introducing-security…

HN discussionI'm not sure what OP is complaining about. From GitHub's announcement it's clear that there's also a new functionality to make it easy for projects to link to whatever funding platform they use. Open Collective is mentioned specifically: > Open source projects can also express their funding models directly from their repositories. When .github/FUNDING.yml is added to a project’s master branch, a new “Sponsor” button…
