Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for the author's security and hardware projects: a self-referencing MD5 file, a Gnuk-based OpenPGP token, and a tool for recovering bitcoin wallet keys from damaged disks.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. It's moderately expensive even with MD5. Ideally you'd like to use the same prefix and use the collision itself to choose between the two. This is easy with code, trickier with images, and even trickier with text-based PDFs but still possible: https://www.makomk.com/~aidan/selfmd5-lastfix.pdf

  3. I actually ended up building my own OpenPGP stick a while ago using Gnuk: https://www.makomk.com/2016/01/23/openpgp-crypto-token-using... Should probably write it up properly sometime and maybe ask about getting support for my custom hardware merged upstream. (The official hardware's also open, but the case it's designed for was only available from the US and I'm not set up to solder QFN and 0402 parts. Not that fin…

  5. Ha, funny, just this Monday I had to recover wallet.dat from a slightly corrupted HDD drive. What I needed is just the private key bytes (32), unfortunately the disk was unreadable. What helped was RAW access to data on disk coupled with this little tool that scans for private key signatures: https://www.makomk.com/gitweb/?p=bitcoin-wallet-recover.git;... Then of course the bytes had to be converted to addresses to…

  6. It was also a mainstream news story for days that the White House spread a doctored video which was sped up to make it look like a CNN reporter attacked a White House intern. Thing is, it was trivial to verify that wasn't at all true: if you actually compare the speed with the original frame by frame it's not sped up anywhere. The artifacts some reporters claimed were from it being sped up are actually frame rate up…

  7. Here's what I've used: http://www.makomk.com/~aidan/wallet-recover-0.3-linux.tar.gz Put this on a bootable usb with ubuntu or something and run it against the drive in question. Let it run overnight, and in the morning, you may find yourself with a windfall. Here's the thread with more info: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=25091.0 After it runs, it will create a wallet.dat file that you will load with bitcoi…
