The Perils of Parallel is a personal blog at perilsofparallel.blogspot.com about systems and hardware. Since 2009, 8 different Hacker News readers have linked it 25 times, most often “The Parallel Power Law”. The last post was in 2012, but the archive is still widely read.

Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for background on parallel computing, including the power advantage of parallel cores and Apple's processor design strategy. Posts on accelerators and GPGPU are also cited.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

A blog about multicore, cloud computing, accelerators, Virtual Worlds, and likely other topics, loosely driven by the effective end of Moore’s Law. It’s also a place to try out topics for my next book.

Yes, there is a huge power advantage to parallel cores. This is definitely worth reading for some background on why Apple is doing what they are doing: http://perilsofparallel.blogspot.com/2010/02/parallel-power-... The comments on it are also really good.

  3. As he says in the article, there is no theoretical reason you can't keep adding cores if they will fit. So given that a 486 was about a million transistors, and a modern Nehalem has about a billion, you could probably make a chip with a thousand 486s on it today. A clock frequency of 10 GHz is crazy talk, on the other hand. It would use way too much power. The power dissipation of a circuit is something like P = C *…

Very eloquent and insightful post by yosefk. Maybe I shouldn't admit this(as a founder of Adapteva) but I actually learned something very important from his post.:-) Here's another sharp post by Greg Pfister that also talks about the importance of timing of accelerators. http://perilsofparallel.blogspot.com/2009/07/why-accelerator... Here are my BIG unknowns for the next 5 years: -What road-bumps will there be down…
