Why HN links it
The only comment is a reader's nostalgia for the Escape Velocity and EV Nova space games and their mods, with a link to the blog. It does not discuss the writing.

What Hacker News says?
I've written probably one interesting thing: http://blog.eamonnmr.com/2020/04/dont-remake-an-old-game/ A dire warning against fan remakes.

HN discussionMy project was a 3d in-browser escape velocity clone (think Endless Sky.) It ended up with an impressive feature set, mediocre graphics, not nearly enough world, no real game loop, and no players: http://flythrough.space My mistake was building it totally in secret for most of its life. I worked on it for years focusing on adding features that maybe nobody wanted without validating the product/market fit or generati…

HN discussionI was obsessed with EV growing up, and then found EV:Nova during college. Such awesome games! And the mods.. oh god, the mods rocked! Full Star Wars clone... it was crazy awesome. I'll never forget that red alien blob craft (IIRC, it was in the original EV), it slow slow to turn but very powerful, allowing configurations with ridiculous amounts of weapons. And then the stunningly gorgeous Kestrel ( http://blog.eamon…

HN discussionI got one of these as an emulation box because a retropi couldn't handle the N64 games I wanted to run, and for that purpose it's worked brilliantly. It's pretty cool that it's x86-I plan to try and do some WINE gaming on it as well which isn't possible on, say, a retropi. I haven't tried the official images, but it runs fine with the standard Ubuntu image. Setup notes: http://blog.eamonnmr.com/2019/04/atomic-pi-emu…

HN discussionBefore flash came to dominate browser games, there where Applets. The tooling wasn't there in the same way it was for flash, so it wasn't the same explosion of creativity. But there was some fun stuff out there, arcade clones, etc. I did a writeup of how to go and relive some of that fun: http://blog.eamonnmr.com/2020/03/playing-a-90s-web-game-in-t...
