What Hacker News says?
I've been looking at MEO Cloud[1]. It's by Sapo.pt, a part of Portugal Telecom. I first saw it recommended by Rui Carmo of Tao of Mac[2], who I've generally thought offers good advice. (He also is Portuguese...) And, they offer a Linux download unlike most other alternatives. [1]: https://meocloud.pt/ [2]: http://the.taoofmac.com/ [Edited for clarity and fixed links.]

HN discussionToo bad that miscellaneous issues prevent them from getting an Android port out -- regardless of RAM and CPU requirements, I've been trying to get a decent accelerated web view going on it since I first got one, and _nothing_ works well enough (Qt5 took forever to stabilise - and still isn't quite there yet, X11 still has no hardware acceleration, there are no browsers that take advantage of Wayland, Firefox OS is s…

HN discussionNice, but a couple of months too late for me. I've switched over to Parallels 9 on the Mac, and it is _much_ faster overall (not to mention better USB support). Also, I highly recommend Vagrant users to look into the vagrant-LXC plugin - that, too, is one heck of a lot faster than using either VirtualBox or VMware providers. I've documented my setup here: http://the.taoofmac.com/space/HOWTO/Vagrant

HN discussionThis should run most of the existing Ubuntu and Android images without any hassle. Having owned an ODROID-U2 for a long while now, I can tell you that these things run Ubuntu 14.04 like a dream (except for the lack of OpenGL - you only get ES) and Android works great: http://the.taoofmac.com/space/blog/2013/02/10/1230 (Mine is now running Ubuntu only, and the only gripe I have is that the kernel currently lacks enou…

HN discussionI've been messing around with Inferno for a while (link below for completeness). I would love to have, say, Clojure, Python or something else with a sizable set of built-in libraries running on it, but (at least where Inferno is concerned) I had a lot of trouble finding anything to bootstrap that kind of environment (Inferno uses the `dis` VM, and there is a GSOC project that sort of gets Java running around that, b…

HN discussionI've been using Textile for ages, and it's much better than Markdown for just about anything _except_ footnotes (in MultiMarkdown) and pieces with multiple references to the same URL. In particular, Textile has great table syntax, which I use extensively in pages like http://the.taoofmac.com/space/infoviz (markup at http://the.taoofmac.com/media/infoviz/index.txt ). But over the years I became so used to Markdown (l…

HN discussionI actually came across this on a footnote here: http://the.taoofmac.com/space/blog/2013/02/10/1230#an-arm-on... Note that the guy got Ubuntu 12.04 running on an ODROID board using a similar technique from a prebuilt image. So it's apparently a very easy thing to get going...

HN discussionYes, that would make sense. The site I got this from ( http://the.taoofmac.com ) mentions using PyPy on all machines to run it (which is effectively Python 2.7.1 at this point), but then again, you have to match versions very closely when you're using Hadoop and HDFS anyway... Python is actually easier to deploy in matched runtimes across a cluster :)

HN discussionI have a U2 (basically the same as the U3 with less ports), and the thing is so good I used it as a desktop for a couple of weeks ( http://the.taoofmac.com/space/blog/2013/02/10/1230 ) - running NetBeans at a fair clip, to boot. The only thing stopping me from getting a couple of U3s is lack of cash, and I heartily recommend it. The Pi is... Sort of mediocre as a desktop (even as a thin client) and too complex for m…

HN discussionTo be clear (because I was wondering why all these commands were required), installing a version of Ubuntu on your phone just requires Complete Linux Installer http://the.taoofmac.com/space/blog/2013/03/30/2107 (and busybox and loopback filesystem etc.) This post is specifically about creating a new image from scratch to use with the Complete Linux Installer rather than using the ones that are provided for download…
