What Hacker News says?
An interesting question for the DSLR makers is what they could learn from the tablet. The pictures are great, but especially at the entry level there's opportunity for improved interfaces and easier publishing. ( http://www.bythom.com/design2010.htm ) has some interesting ideas.

HN discussionNikon have just published a complete free and quite sophisticated photo software suite, most useful summary of which here : https://bythom.com/newsviews/nikon-launches-new-software.htm... Ed; "Everything is there: stills, video, image browsing, NEF processing, Lightroom-like capabilities, cloud integration, image ingest, and much more."

HN discussionFrom one of the best camera industry observers: Yeah, no. https://bythom.com/newsviews/nikkei-needs-new-staff.html It is self-evident that DSLRs are basically done—I would be surprised if any totally new cameras with actual flipping mirrors are introduced. But there’s no actual evidence that Nikon is stopping production of its remaining higher-end DSLRs.

HN discussionThom Hogan for a few decades reports on Nikon product strategy & financials. From most recent article with comment on Nikons financial situation: > That said, if I were one of those financial rating companies, I'd be downgrading Nikon's rating at the moment. You know, from something like A to BBB (using Standard & Poor's rating board). (Nikon publishes their Japan Credit Rating Agency value, which is currently A+/Ne…

HN discussionThe answer goes back even further than my time in photography, which was over ten years ago at the transition from film to digital and DSLR video. Before digital, part of the answer was sports photographers all switching to Canon for autofocus. Before that, it was more of an even playing field with cameras (read: marketing). Back then however, Nikon had a semiconductor manufacturing machine business that supplemente…

on “The changing fortunes of Japanese camera manufacturers”And in case of photography it is the expensive stuff that is worth keeping. Actually it would save some money to skip the cheap stuff. Case in point—tripods. There is a good piece about it: http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

on “How I Simplified My Life”I've been channelling Thom Hogan who I've been reading for over 25 years. Thom is the most rational (and frequently only sensible) publicly available voice in the technical aspects of photography. Thom also worked for Osborne Computer.. Edit: https://bythom.com . by the looks of things about everyone here ought to go catch up with Thom's writings ;)

on “Nikon Z9 Disassembly and Teardown”Please change link to Thom Hogan [0], not only does he give a thorough analysis, he also points out the japanese article nikorumor is based on. For anything related to Nikon bythom.com is handsdown the best source. [0] https://www.bythom.com/newsviews/dslr-lens-discontinuation.h...

on “Nikon is slowly discontinuing more Nikkor reflex F-mount lenses”No, he just has chosen his audience — those who like to take a pictures, a bit above point-and-shoot level, but not much. His writing is targeted at people like that. For anyone with higher ambitions I'd recommend http://bythom.com/

on “Nikon F-Mount”I'm seeing a lot of people discussing sales numbers; here is one article showing the decline in terms of both lens and interchangeable lens cameras shipped: https://bythom.com/newsviews/real-camera-economics.html . Lenses appear to have declined by about 66% from 2012 to 2022. Cameras, by a little under 50%. This decline makes sense to me. I have a Fuji XT4 which I like a lot, but, also, starting around the iPhone 1…

on “Dpreview.com is coming to an end”While I agree that there is some valuable content on the site, there are certainly others to fill in the spots... You want detailed look into equipment? on “Dpreview.com is coming to an end”Finally, apps for cameras. Thom Hogan has been advocating this for some time now[1] and the success of the CHDK[2] somehow shows us that a lot of photographers may be interested in this. I hope Nikon starts a trend with this camera and go all the way to Android enabled DSLRs. on “Android based camera from Nikon: Coolpix S800”Please, don't take Ken's stuff too seriously. If you want serious Nikon reviews, go to Thom Hogan's [0] or Moose Peterson's [1], or just dpreview for the technical nitty-gritty stuff. Ken Rockwell is fun to read, but he also 'reviews' stuff he hasn't seen, and has some moronic stances on some issues (like RAW vs. JPEG) [0] http://www.bythom.com/ [1] http://www.moosepeterson.com/blog/
