Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog's posts on hacking Onyx Boox e-ink devices, such as rooting them and blocking their phone-home traffic, and an announcement for the ip6.name IPv6 DNS service. No comment praises or criticises the writing.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I bought the Onyx Boox Note Air some months ago, and I must say that I'm really happy with it. Screen refresh is good, there's almost no ghosting in default mode, and refresh rates are acceptable. There are only two downsides about it: The vendor does not respect FOSS and does not publish the sources for their modified Linux kernel, and the device constantly phones home to China. However, the device can be rooted ea…

  3. I have a Boox Nova 2 and can mostly recommend it. It's true that Onyx violates the GPL and has some privacy concerns around it, but on the upside the bootloader is unlocked by default and you can root the system fairly easily, allowing you to install a firewall restricting some of the phoning home ( https://blog.tho.ms/hacks/2021/03/27/hacking-onyx-boox-note-... ). 5. Don't buy one of these devices! They include spyware, and constant phones home to Chinese servers. They also have a number of GPL violations which makes the company not worth dealing with. https://blog.tho.ms/hacks/2021/03/27/hacking-onyx-boox-note-...

  7. Announcement: https://blog.tho.ms/network/2017/02/25/ip6-name-dns-record-a... I had the idea when I needed a TLS certificate for a system without a global DNS record. I recalled that http://xip.io/ exists for IPv4, but didn't find something similar for IPv6. So I had to do it myself :-)
