Why HN links it
Linked for posts on decentralised social networks and how Riot's push notifications work, plus a post on GNU social groups. One commenter calls the Riot post a great explanation of how it works.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
s0ix is fine so long as it actually activates. The problem is that in some default configurations it doesn't and you end up using a poorer sleep. On my 9305 it was a matter of changing a storage setting in the BIOS and afterwards it was perfectly fine. (If you'll pardon linking my own blog, I wrote about this particular issue a little while ago: https://thomask.sdf.org/blog/2021/08/15/debian-11-bullseye-o... )

HN discussionWhy would you want to automatically resolve the latest semver compatible version from git if you care about security? That's worse than cargo.io where tags are stable, whereas git allows tags to be edited. > No only is it _easier_ to use cargo with crates.io, it's harder to use with anything else because of missing or incomplete features. You're saying the same thing twice here: yes it's easier to use cargo with cra…

HN discussionhttps://thomask.sdf.org/blog/2018/08/19/from-gnu-social-to-m... "There was a cool feature in GNU social called groups that has never existed on Twitter or on Mastodon. A user can register a group on their server—for example there was one about gardening called “!grow”. If you subscribe to the group and then put “!grow” in one of your messages, all the other subscribers see it in their home timeline. It’s similar to…

HN discussion> If Twitter/Facebook start forcing people to install their third-party store to access their app, then there's a massive opportunity to make a better app that's distributed through the App Store. Wouldn’t Twitter, Facebook etc in turn demand that those third-party apps be taken down from the App Store? And even if they didn’t, how is any third party going to keep up with Twitter/Facebook/etc API changes. And what a…

HN discussionhttps://thomask.sdf.org/ - a random assortment of programming (mostly Rust recently), technical quirks, and reflections on technology. I've given up on being consistent enough to stick to a theme.

HN discussionStolen Focus is an interesting book and worth your time, but it's absolutely set on making the case that governments need to intervene on social media and I don't think it did it very well. I wrote a longish review digging into why back in June but it will probably only make complete sense if you've read the book. https://thomask.sdf.org/blog/2023/06/08/book-review-stolen-f...
