Too few sampled comments (1) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

The linked post covers generalizing JSX to deliver curried named parameters, with runnable code examples. The only comment reports that the embedded tonicdev code runner fails, not anything about the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 1 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  1. The fact that IP protection is expensive is essentially its defining feature . One way to think of "intellectual property" is precisely as a weird proof-of-work, since you are trying to simulate the features of physical property for abstract entities that by default behave in the exact opposite fashion. This is the frustrating thing about getting into an argument about how "IP isn't real property" and then having th…

  3. Animation in general is just plain broken in Yosemite (and iOS 8). I'm not up to date with the latest frameworks, but I believe there's been a fundamental API change, because its basically possible to break any animation by just causing an event to happen before its finished. This happens all the time in iOS, you can get it to break mid-rotation and end up in a half and half state: https://twitter.com/tolmasky/statu…

  5. I've written an in depth blog post on "generic jsx", which turns JSX into function bind/currying syntax that would work fine in any framework (or not framework at all, as we currently use it). http://tolmasky.com/2016/03/24/generalizing-jsx/ We use this generic-jsx in DemoKit: https://github.com/runkitdev/demokit , and it's really cool because you can do fancy stuff like: // Curry your JSX tags! const wordmark = <sp…

  7. > What about .jsx though? I think it's a fine enough solution, but the fact that it's a different syntax from your standard js objects encourages people to consider the VDOM objects as "not normal data", but they are. Notation as a tool of thought innit. This is incidental. JSX can be extended beyond just representing HTML nodes, and IMO has far cooler consequences as first class .bind() notation vs. its current use…

  8. We share a similar vision at Tonic that code snippets should be completely runnable. With Tonic embeds ( https://tonicdev.com/embed ) your code is automatically connected to every version of every one of the 300,000 library on npm (just require("library") or require("library@version"), its already pre-installed). Additionally, the code is run in an actual container, so you can use filesystem examples, spin up a web…

  9. The developments that Facebook is working on with React Native are just so much more exciting than another riff on C++. For most "utility" apps, I just don't think performance is such an issue that the point of research should be these (comparably) incredibly low level concerns. When I see the bugs going on in iOS apps, it has to do with models that are broken for what modern programs looks like today: things like a…

  11. > what is the reason why these organic-seeming movements can be modeled mathematically, specifically with trigonometric functions? Any motion can be modeled mathematically. There are probably infinite equations that provide "organic looking motion". I could make one that made really good looking motion but was really long and complex and you could have a parallel person asking "why is nature so messy and not giving…

  12. Some of these points are true of currying in general -- IMO most of the time you can't tell what's a function call and what's a curry (Haskell people would say "its the same thing!"). However, separating these concepts leads to a lot of super interesting results. I wrote about this in this blog post: http://tolmasky.com/2016/03/24/generalizing-jsx/ . I argue that the JSX syntax makes for an awesome syntax for curryi…

  13. Funnily enough, I did this as a quick example for my generic-JSX blog post a few years ago ( http://tolmasky.com/2016/03/24/generalizing-jsx/ ). You can see it here, it creates JSX definitions from Babel AST definitions, so you end up with Babel/MDN compatible trees: https://runkit.com/tolmasky/generic-jsx-for-babel-javascript...
