Too few sampled comments (11) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

HN commenters mostly link Toradex as an embedded hardware vendor (computer-on-modules, carrier boards) and cite its pages on Qt without a GPU, fast boot demos, and Torizon. None of the comments judge the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 11 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Qt Quick should support non-GPU rendering[1]. I don't know how good it is, tho. [1] https://www.toradex.com/blog/running-qt-without-gpu

  3. > Is there anyone shipping an ARM motherboard and ARM chip? I think the "openness" is also defined by what the market offers. All I see are non-extendable notebooks. The closest analogue to what you described in the ARM world would be plugging either a Computer-on-Module or System-on-Chip into a carrier board. Today's ARM deployments are presently largely focused on energy efficiency, so they make heavier use of int…

  5. Is it? The estimates going around of $10-$25 are for the chip only . You still need to SMT solder it to a board and connect power, storage, etc. The only currently immediately available Tegra ready-made board (tegra 2, which was cheaper) costs $110 at volume[1]. OUYA has to add plastic casing, power source, connectors, storage, wireless AND a wireless controller, and source manufacturing for many tens of thousands o…

  7. Intel IoT boards generally hover around 10 W at idle. ARM SoMs usually 5 W. You need to order some prototypes for testing of course. Pricing is quite different from supplier to supplier. Usually around 50 - 100 € Here are a couple suppliers for NXP boards: Toradex (Switzerland): https://www.toradex.com/ Phytec (Germany / India): https://www.phytec.com/products/ Variscite (Taiwan): https://variscite.com/ Intel boards…

  8. The end result looks nice, I'd say even surprisingly so all things considered. This sort of thing is something I have wanted to do for some time, but have been pushing back due lack of money/time/tools/skills. Albeit in my grandiose plans I was thinking of more "engineered" approach, using some nice ARM module[1] instead of stripped RPi, bare LCD[2], custom keyboard[3] etc. [1] e.g. https://www.toradex.com/computer-…

  9. There are embedded Linux demos that boot into a GUI application in about a second. Linux systems don't boot slowly because "POSIX" isn't capable, it is a matter of boot time vs. flexibility and developer convenience / development time. There are also Windows CE systems that boot that fast. Linux demo: https://www.toradex.com/de/videos/fast-boot-demo-with-linux-... I have a few moderate boot time improvement projects…

  10. Nothing about NXP? They are a pretty big player in this space, and mostly do a great job contributing upstream to the kernel, but I guess they don't have a hobby-level entry point readily available. I've used NXP-based embedded Linux hardware from Toradex, Gateworks and EmbeddedTS in previous projects, lots of vendors out there. https://www.toradex.com/ https://www.gateworks.com/ https://www.embeddedts.com/ https://…

You mean like Netduino? http://www.netduino.com/ Otherwise there are a few options already https://www.toradex.com/windows-iot-starter-kit https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/iot/Explore/de... The problem with using C and Assembly instead of more productive options, when the hardware allows for it, is that many don't search properly.

  12. What part of "subsidized by Broadcom to create suckers and exploit them" is not clear? The BBB Bill of Materials is public. What parts of that BOM should they throw out to get to you that $50 AUD target? The AM3359 is $11 in 1K units by itself.
