Why HN links it

HN readers link Tweag's blog for technical posts on Haskell, Nix, linear types and the Nickel configuration language, often as references or pointers to further reading.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Yes `nix-env -iA` is installing packages in an imperative way. I think it is there to be some kind of tool that people from other OS can relate to. Purist say you should avoid using it for installing packages and instead list global packages in `/etc/nixos/configuration.nix` for globally installed packages and home-manager for user specific ones, and if you need temporarily just to try something out use `nix-shell -…

  13. I'm not sure why you'd want to generate a Makefile if you're using nix. Unlike make, nix understands the inputs to a build step and won't bother rerunning it unless their inputs have changed. You would lose that you generated a Makefile instead of having nix build whatever it is that the Makefile builds. Otherwise it does the same things as make: this bunch of commands depends on this other bunch of commands... It j…

  19. I didn't find any architectural details on QPX after they've been acquired by Google. For Haskell I remember reading about Cloud Haskell ( https://haskell-distributed.github.io/ ) which allows you to write Erlang-style systems and Sparkle ( https://github.com/tweag/sparkle ) by Tweag ( http://www.tweag.io/ ) which allows you to use Haskell with Apache Spark. But those are tools and libraries and not complete product…

  21. > Yup, it's mostly just the story and tools we used to get ourselves out of a mess that was made harder by some decisions made earlier -- the tests were running in a container with stripped symbols (we're going to ship symbols after this, no reason to over-optimize) It's worth noting here that you can also build your binaries and keep debug symbols separately. You don't need to ship them with the binary (although it…

  23. Since this uses cosmopolitan and the build script already downloads portable binaries from https://cosmo.zip has there any thought been given to wrap other portable binaries in scrapscript / download them? Small, pure, functional, content-addressable and network-first sounds a lot like a mini Nix+ca-derivations [1] [1] https://www.tweag.io/blog/2021-12-02-nix-cas-4/

  27. The package in the cache which it's downloaded from? I think so. It would be a bit more involved that "replace the package for gcc-11". The packages are addressed by the inputs which built them. There has been some effort towards supporting content-addressable storage. https://www.tweag.io/blog/2020-09-10-nix-cas/ https://edolstra.github.io/pubs/secsharing-ase2005-final.pdf
