What Hacker News says?

  1. (I wrote the original Dropping Django post) I wrote a quick comment at http://uswaretech.com/blog/2009/08/a-response-to-dropping-dj... Maybe I wasn't clear enough, or maybe this is just guaranteed flame war territory. But I think this comment sums up what I was trying to say better than anything: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=773510 I'm going to try to write more about our URL routing and authorization soon.

  3. I have as basic a setup as a dual monitor can be. A laptop connected to a second display, http://uswaretech.com/dump/screenshots/screenshot_018.png With this Ubuntu will, 1. Get the initial display order wrong 50% of the time, (The monitor which was on the left will be on right on next startup.) 2. Wont get the the larger monitor to display in its full area, if I plug the second monitor and enable it to already runn…

  7. Yes, there are a number of solutions for django. The one used by the forum (and also by cnprog.com) is django-authopenid ( http://bitbucket.org/benoitc/django-authopenid/wiki/Home ) which integrates with existing django auth db. Users can choose sign up for an account on your django site or sign in with an openid. Some other solutions include: django-socialauth ( http://uswaretech.com/blog/2009/08/django-socialauth-…

  9. I started with their socialauth app, and heavily modified it for http://bln.kr . I wanted to allow a user to login with one service, then add additional services to the same account. http://uswaretech.com/blog/2009/08/django-socialauth-login-v...

  11. Is this what you are talking about? Taken from: http://uswaretech.com/blog/2010/01/doing-things-with-django-... higher in this thread. 5. Prob. You want to create a field which has cross field validations. Ans. Create a field with a .clean class UserForm(forms.Form): username = forms.CharField() password1 = forms.PasswordField() password2 = forms.PasswordField() def clean(self): data = self.cleaned_data if "password…

  13. Forms are IMO, most misunderstood, and underdocumentated feature of Django. A from is not just a representation of a HTML. A form is, 0. a representation of a HTML form. 1. Knows how to validate and sanitize that data. 2. Know what to do with the data. In my apps, a lot of logic is in forms, (which people generally put in views.) Its written by me, but I think is explains some interesting ways to use forms which peo…

  15. I am obviously biased, as I run a django development company. That said, Ill start with answering the drawbacks of Django, 1. Learning curve. Not more than any other framework. Plus the Documentation is top notch. (The documentation was what sold me when I was evaluating.) 2. Smaller community Definately true. But beyond a critical size, size of community does not matter. Django is well above that size. (Irc: any gi…

  17. All of these use Markov Chains: A weather simulator, that guesses tomorrow's weather by looking at today's state and retrieving the probability of case x tomorrow. Run it a few times, see what the weather patterns look like. A chat between two bots, that use nlp and maybe an algorithm to check if they make sense. See if they always finish with the same results. Then, apply this to the human mind and reflect. Great r…

  19. We push to production 3-4 times a day. You mean the carrousel on the home page ? I'll take a look. That page hasn't really been touched since we started developing and needs a complete makeover. Thanks for the heads up !
