  11. This is a problem I'm pretty invested in so let's take a look. If we add the list of dependencies from the modules this is what we get anyhow = "1.0.98" base64 = "0.22.1" bytes = "1.10.1" constcat = "0.6.1" futures-channel = "0.3.31" http = "1.3.1" http-body = "1.0.1" http-body-util = "0.1.3" http-serde = "2.1.1" hyper = { version = "1.6.0", features = ["client", "http1"] } libc = "0.2.174" nginx-sys = "0.5.0-beta"…

  18. https://vincents.dev/blog/creating-a-search-engine/ ? I visited the page on mobile and I have to scroll horizontally back and forth before I can read? That is not fun at all.

  19. I'm sympathetic to the supply chain problem I even wrote a whole thing on it https://vincents.dev/blog/rust-dependencies-scare-me/ That being said as many above have pointed out you can choose not to bring in dependencies. The Chrome team already does this with the font parser library they limit dependencies to 1 or 2 trusted ones with little to no transitive dependencies. Let's not pretend C / C++ is immune to this…

  21. This is great. Heretical idea: of a software project, if you can't read the whole thing and understand it, it isn't really FOSS. It's not "open" if it's too long to understand. See also: https://vincents.dev/blog/rust-dependencies-scare-me/ ?

  22. Talked about this topic here on my blog https://vincents.dev/blog/rust-dependencies-scare-me/ It sparked some interesting discussion by lots of the rust maintainers https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43935067 A fat std lib will definitely not solve the problem. I am a proponent of the rust foundation taking packages under their wing and having them audited and funded while keeping original maintainers in tact
