Why HN links it

HN readers link vlcn.io as the home of cr-sqlite, a SQLite extension for CRDT-based syncing between databases. Commenters cite its docs on local-first apps, syncing across browser tabs and SQLite persistence options.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 12 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  3. there's also a CRDT version of this, which allows two databases to be sync'ed to each other in real time (aka, updates to one will eventually make it to the other, and both database would eventually contain the same data). It's https://vlcn.io/docs/cr-sqlite/intro , and i find it amazing that this is doable in sqlite. It is perfect for small scale collaboration imho, but it also works to sync across local client and…

  7. If you fetch from a repo with a slightly different history for a named branch than what you have locally, git fetch will fail. Thus git fetch operations are not part of a CRDT. Similarly, the order in which you synchronize (fetch or merge) from remote sources is order dependent and does not eventually converge to the same result (e.g. the commit hashes will diverge for a simple reason that the current time is part o…

  8. I am fully on the offline-first bandwagon after starting to use cr-sqlite ( https://vlcn.io ), which works similar to ElectricSQL. I thought the bundle size of wasm-sqlite would be prohibitive, but it's surprisingly quick to download and boot. Reducing network reliance solves so many problems and corner-cases in my web app. Having access to local data makes everything very snappy too - the user experience is much be…

  10. Not quite the answer to your question, but there are quite a few people looking at doing eventually consistent database syncing with CRDTs. Two interesting ones are: https://electric-sql.com/ - SQLite and Postgres syncing https://vlcn.io/ - SQLite syncing I've been experimenting with Yjs and merging documents in database via SQL, for both SQLite and Postgres. And allowing you to query the contents of those documents…

  11. What's wrong with many tabs? The DB handles getting hit by many tabs correctly -- it's just as if many processes were hitting the db in a non-browser environment. Example of syncing your app across tabs with SQLite here: https://vlcn.io/docs/guide-solving-tabs

  13. For a tenanted SAAS app SQLite at the edge is a really compelling architecture. You have a single DB per customer/company/group with all their users woking against that. It can operate at the edge, closest to where the majority of the customers users are. SQLite could scale to even quite large customers with this. Another really compelling architecture is a DB per user, with partial/selective sync between the nodes.…
