HN discussionThe original article is here: http://wanderingbarque.com/nonintersecting/2006/11/15/the-s-... I am glad to see it get more attention. It is a classic and it is really about more than SOAP. It is about the way technologies get hyped and over-sold and over-promised, and then made unusably complicated. SOAP is just the example.

HN discussion"threw up in my mouth a little." "Gee, let me get this straight." "Bullshit." "Seriously?" I have to say that one of my regrets about growing up in programmer circles is seeing stuff like this held up as an acceptable example of how adults communicate with other adults. It took me a long time to realize that this style of communication is not necessary, is not effective, and reflects poorly on the speaker. C'mon, th…

HN discussionOne of the things in life I really regret is suggesting SOAP on a project. I thought it was just a packaged, somewhat elaborated version of a semi-reasonable XML-RPC type thing --- and worse, that the idea that it was standardized meant that you could count on some kind of half-decent interoperability. It was initially sold that way, but that was just the first of a parade of sales pitches, hilariously chronicled he…

HN discussionLook, I'm not a REST cheerleader by any stretch of the imagination but in REST terms the OP just doesn't know his ass from his elbow here. Consider: > POST /orders/42/pay > POST /orders/42/ship You don't put verbs in your URLs. This is really REST 101. I highly recommend Nobody understands REST or HTTP [1]. The above is exactly why you don't put verbs in URLs. Consider instead: POST /payment { orderId=42, etc } POST…

HN discussionI think a lot of it comes down to SOAP, and related standards, being ambiguous and changing enough over time that even if you follow the standards, it isn't necessarily clear what you can and should do. Take a look at WS-I, the standard which tells you just how you should implement all of the standards that came before it, if you actually want to talk to other implementations: http://ws-i.org/profiles/BasicProfile-1…
