Why HN links it
Commenters link WarpBuild as a faster, cheaper hosted runner for GitHub Actions, and point to its pricing and comparison pages. The comments are about the product rather than any written article.

What Hacker News says?
Because GHA was stagnant and expensive and multiple services like https://www.warpbuild.com/ popped up, with better performance and much lower price. Looks like they ate enough of GH’s lunch…

HN discussionYou might want to check out my product, WarpBuild[0]. We are fully usage based, no minimums etc., and our container builders are faster than others on the market. We also have a BYOC option that gives 10x cost reduction and used by many customers at scale. [0] https://warpbuild.com

HN discussion> Why do I need a custom token? Because without it, the release completes, but doesn't trigger our post-release workflow. This is so frustrating. Having to inject a PAT into the workflow just so it will kick off another workflow is not only annoying but it just feels wrong. Also not lots of operations are tied to my user which I don't like. > It doesn't help that you can't really try any of this locally (I know of […

HN discussionThere definitely are a ton of issues with GitHub actions. To add to the OP's list: - Self-hosting on your aws/gcp/azure account can get a little tricky. `actions-runner-controller` is nice but runs your workflows within a docker container in k8s, which leads to complex handling for isolation, cost controls because of NAT etc. - Multi-arch container builds require emulation and can be extremely slow by default. - The…

HN discussionThis sucks for individuals and open source. For folks that have a heavy reliance on dockerhub, here are some things that may help (not all are applicable to all use cases): 1. Setup a pull through mirror. Google Artifact Registry has decent limits and good coverage for public images. This requires just one config change and can be very useful to mitigate rate limits if you're using popular images cached in GAR.[1] 2…

HN discussionThis is very cool optimization. I make a similar product offering fast Github actions runners[1] and we've been down this rabbit hole of boot time optimization. Eventually, we realized that the best solution is to actually build scale. There are two factors in your favor then: 1) Spikes are less pronounced and the workloads are a lot more predictable. 2) The predictability means that you have a decent estimate of th…

on “GitHub Linux ARM64 hosted runners now available for free in public repositories”GitHub Actions is overpriced and slow. WarpBuild [0] is so much nicer. Our iOS build times dropped in half and cost less than the base macOS runner on GHA. It couldn’t have been easier, just set it up, changed the runner image name, and then I promptly forgot about it because it works the exact same way as before. GH secrets work, runs show up in the same place. It’s one of the only times I’ve improved performance a…

on “GitHub Linux ARM64 hosted runners now available for free in public repositories”TLDR: disk is often the bottleneck in builds. Use 'fio' to get performance of the disk. If you want to truly speed up builds by optimizing disk performance, there are no shortcuts to physically attaching NVMe storage with high throughput and high IOPS to your compute directly. That's what we do at WarpBuild[0] and we outperform Depot runners handily. This is because we do not use network attached disks which come wi…

on “One year of Dioxus fullstack in production: the good, the painful”> Caching with Swatinem/rust-cache. It helps, but there’s a trap. A workflow run can only restore caches from its own ref or the default branch, and GitHub evicts caches unused for 7 days. > A self-hosted runner for the heavy builds. This was by far the biggest win, 90 minutes down to 40. It also means I now maintain a build server. WarpBuild ( https://www.warpbuild.com/ )[1] solved this for me. 1. You can cache int…

on “Show HN: WarpBuild – x86-64 and arm GitHub Action runners for 30% faster builds”I only use GitHub (and actions) for personal open-source projects, so I can't really complain because I'm getting everything for free¹. But even for those projects I recently had to (partially) switch actions to a paid solution² because GitHub's runners were randomly getting stuck for no discernible reason. ¹ Glossing over the "what they're getting in return" part. ² https://www.warpbuild.com/

on “GitHub Actions is the weakest link”Yup! Still haven't switched off of Github, but considering it at this point. If you're in my shoes, here's some tools we use that help: - https://github.com/sethvargo/ratchet for pinning external Actions/Workflows to specific commit hashes - https://www.warpbuild.com/ for much faster runners (also: runs-on/namespace/buildjet/blacksmith/depot/... take your pick) - soon moving to Buildkite for orchestration of our CI…

on “GitHub Actions is the weakest link”I put together a detailed write-up on setting up self-hosted GitHub Actions Runners using ARC (Actions Runner Controller) on AWS using EKS. This includes terraform code for provisioning the infrastructure, and helm configurations for Karpenter v1.0 setup. We also ran a couple of variants in configuration for cost and performance comparison using Karpenter for autoscaling and other best practices. Using a couple of P…
