What Hacker News says?

  1. Apple doesn't invest sufficient resources in Safari even with Google's competition and support[1]. [1]: https://webventures.rejh.nl/blog/2024/history-of-safari-show...

  3. > The only reason why Safari is "shit" is because web developers are too lazy to develop for the web and instead develop for Chrome. Safari is only available on Apple devices, Chrome is available everywhere. Let's not pretend that laziness is the only reason why Chrome has the largest marketshare. > The point of the web is that it's an open standard. Expecting everyone to use the bleeding edge version of the most ag…

  4. Yeah so native apps have some unique abilities to track you that websites do not. On top of that, platforms like Reddit and Facebook tend to prefer native apps because it's easier to keep you within the app. Even if you click a link to an external website, for example, Facebook will open that link in an in-app browser (unless you find the opt-out). A few years ago, a researcher found out that these apps often inject…

  5. 100% agree. Except it would be nice to have a notification, reminding you that the meter is running. And on iOS, you need to install a web app before it can send notifications, defeating the point of not having to install anything. https://webventures.rejh.nl/blog/2023/ios-web-push-requires-...

  6. I have many MANY grievances with Safari: 1. Mandating all browsers on iOS/iPadOS to be powered by Safari (excluding in the EU). This doesn't sound bad, but wait until #3 below... 2. Safari's many bugs. Too many bugs. Oh so many bugs. Damn that's a lot of bugs. - See: https://webventures.rejh.nl/blog/2024/history-of-safari-show... - Also see the State of CSS developer survey where Safari makes up such a large portion…

  7. And alas web push notifications on iOS remain very critically buggered beyond measure. https://webventures.rejh.nl/blog/2024/web-push-ios-one-year/ I get that not everyone would accept a web-app replacement, but it sure would be nice if iOS wasn't actively obstructing the possibility of some folks using a web-app messaging service.

  8. There's supposed to be an open standard for Web Push notifications. ICEBlock would need to build out more tools for themselves, but the same user flow they have now should work with a PWA, using these open universal standards. Alas, Apple's Web Push implementation has massive problems with it and there's no sign it'll improve. https://webventures.rejh.nl/blog/2024/web-push-ios-one-year/ Once again Apple mysteriously…

  9. It is bizarre that you're "pinning" this on the Chromium engineers - who are essentially the only ones moving the web forward. The safari feet dragging/obstruction goes far beyond PWAs. The chart on this page is one of many examples showing how consistently far behind Safari is - they've been enormously behind chrome and firefox in coverage of tests for 7+ years. https://wpt.fyi/ . And here's an extremely comprehens…
