Why HN links it

HN readers link wheybags' blog for a benchmarked faster reimplementation of cp using modern kernel APIs (wcp), and a post about resurrecting the Dune RTS game.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Amazing! I absolutely love projects like this, where you put a game in somewhere it clearly wasn't meant to be. I made a game you play in your file browser[0] before, and I have another idea planned using windows error dialogs. 0: https://wheybags.com/dungeons_and_directories/

  3. > For example for cp, most of the time is spending copying the files. As it turns out, cp can be made significantly faster by using (very) modern kernel APIs: https://wheybags.com/blog/wcp.html 20 512MiB files wcp 3.97s, 2579.59 MiB/s cp 8.44s, 1213.38 MiB/s rsync 17.26s, 593.33 MiB/s

  5. @wheybags, you may want to optimize the images. https://wheybags.com/assets/blog_pics/emperor/first_coop.jpg is 5MB for no good reason, and takes forever to load, etc.

  7. I'm one of the Google engineers who work on multigenerational LRU. The kernel page cache doesn't know better than databases themselves when it comes to what to cache. All high performance databases do this in user space, and they use AIO with direct IO or the latest io_uring to bypass the kernel page cache. Modern cloud (distributed) file systems do the same, including GFS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_File_…

  9. Not a question, but I made a similar tool in c++[1], for Linux only using io_uring, and a blog post explaining its internals [2]. I'll definitely have a look some time soon, I'd be interested to see how performance compares (I gathered from some other comments here that you're using blocking io in threads?) 1: https://github.com/wheybags/wcp 2: https://wheybags.com/blog/wcp.html

  11. If you're on Linux, and you want to copy multiple files, the best bet is probably io_uring. I actually wrote a small file copy program / blog post about this: https://wheybags.com/blog/wcp.html

  13. I made an std::vector like wrapper[1] based on this principle, it was fun. Also focused on some of the other advantages you get, like never having to move data when you grow the array, and not invalidating pointers/iterators. Never really used it though. 1: https://wheybags.com/blog/pinned.html

  21. As someone who recently built a daily word game[1], I 100% get it. I can say from first hand experience: there's an awful lot of words that are totally valid but not fun. I spent approximately as much time on building the word list as I did developing the game. The author's technique of just grabbing a word list and spellchecking it is completely not sufficient, you will get so many weird unfamiliar words in there.…
