I think HRM is more useful than compass/barometer since HR is the only thing your phone can't do. The https://www.whoop.com/ , for example, doesn't even have GPS. All of its value comes from its HRM. Barometer is especially niche and not something very trustworthy outside of devices made for it. To the average person, compass is only useful for showing orientation on a map.

HN discussion[Whoop]( https://www.whoop.com/ ) has a lot of buzz right now and offers some interesting looking sleep insight. I haven't used one myself yet so I can't speak from personal experience.

HN discussionFrom what I've heard, Whoop ( https://whoop.com ) has the best sleep tracking, but it is subscription based and the monthly price is ridiculous for a device that has not even a screen

HN discussionI use and recommend Whoop, it's a fitness tracker worn around the wrist that focuses on sleep and recovery. They recently had their sleep tracking validated against polysomnography ( https://www.whoop.com/the-locker/how-well-whoop-measures-sle... )

HN discussionI’ve been using the WHOOP tracker for the last few months. Initially did some work to determine what my baseline was, but every morning you answer a journal (it’s most differentiating feature, imo) where you add things like alcohol, caffeine, melatonin, etc consumption and other things like airline travel, sleeping in same bed, etc. After seeing what is correlated and not, I have had an extreme increase in sleep qua…

on “Real Time Continuous Blood Monitoring”I don't particularly care about the NBA, but I followed your link anyways, and came across this gem: > A recent study by WHOOP, a biometric device company with NBA clients, found what researchers called a "four-day hangover" in the post-drinking health metrics of 148 student-athletes. Heart rates were 16 percent higher after a night of drinking, and a measurement of heartbeat interval variation was 23 percent lower.…

on “How might the coronavirus change our world?”Some more info on the product page: https://www.whoop.com/thelocker/whoop-4-0-vs-3-0-whats-new/ The new device has 17% improved battery capacity which allows it to maintain the same battery life at 2/3 the size. Not groundbreaking overall, but could make a big impact for wearables. 2mm shaved off an Apple watch, for example, would make it way more comfortable.

on “Silanano launches the first new commercial battery chemistry since 1991”Surprised (or maybe not?) by the negativity of the comments here. This is a direct competitor to Whoop[1]. Athletes and friends of mine rave about it. Knowing physical strain, recovery levels, etc. helps you know when to train harder, when to take a day off, when to specifically rest up. For somebody aiming for elite performance (physically and mentally), the data is invaluable. [1]: https://www.whoop.com

on “Amazon launches Halo: tracks activity, body fat, emotions”It's true there exists a "fat burn zone" where the ratio of fat burned to calories spent is higher. It's not true that's it's beneficial for people trying to lose weight to limit their calories burned to that zone, though. What governs weight loss is total calories in vs. total calories out: https://www.whoop.com/thelocker/fat-burning-heart-rate-zone/

on “Death of the Calorie (2019)”no worries dude. Ah great, I'm sure you'll find the Oura ring really useful to lead a balanced lifestyle. You are right, _managed_ stress - or, exercise - is necessary to improve fitness and resilience. I guess the trick is to stress your body enough to elicit improvements but not too much so that you end up in a chronic stress situation through over-training. E.g. I over trained last week and my HRV crashed the sta…

on “Ask HN: Tips for handling chronic stess?”If you only want to use it for sleep tracking and fitness and don't care about the other smart watch features, look into Whoop. You pay a monthly fee instead of up front but it is a much better fitness and sleep tracker than any smart watch I know of. Bonus: You can charge the whoop while you wear it so you don't miss out on sleep tracking as is mentioned in other comments. https://www.whoop.com/
