Why HN links it

HN readers link Will Drevo's writeups on audio fingerprinting and recognition, which explain how Shazam-style services work. They are cited alongside his Dejavu Python library.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

In case anyone is interested, this is a good read on how audio finger printing in services like Shazam, Soundhound et al work: http://willdrevo.com/fingerprinting-and-audio-recognition-wi...

  5. Hey! Creator here. Awesome to see this get posted and people excited about the project. I made a cool writeup about it here: http://willdrevo.com/fingerprinting-and-audio-recognition-wi... It's a great little library for doing audio recognition, stream radio advertisement verification, and all sorts of interesting people email about all the time that I never would have thought of. It's certainly not as speedy as Ech…

This is amazing! truly great explanation in the related blog post here http://willdrevo.com/fingerprinting-and-audio-recognition-wi... Does anyone know of a good explanation of locality sensitive hashing? I know there are other applications.

  9. Very cool stuff! It seems that all those solutions are based on the analysis of visual representations of spectrograms. Is this common or could you just use 2d arrays which encode the same information - would this be more performant? Nice blog post about this stuff: http://willdrevo.com/fingerprinting-and-audio-recognition-wi... - https://github.com/worldveil/dejavu

  10. This is somewhat of a misnomer. For those of you who came here expecting acoustic fingerprinting, realize this is a different class of algorithms related to locality sensitive hashing (LSH), ala Shazam, etc. If you look at the page [here]( https://audiofingerprint.openwpm.com/ ), you'll see they are merely looking at the audio processing capabilities for your browser's, which is tied to your hardware microphone's /…

  11. My understanding is you're looking for landmarks in the audio and then matching/aligning on those. Shenidam is open source software which does the whole process, site offline, GitHub still up: https://web.archive.org/web/20160309034204/http://shenidam.o... and https://github.com/stendardo/shenidam A node stream module: https://github.com/adblockradio/stream-audio-fingerprint Python: https://github.com/dpwe/audfprint…
