What Hacker News says?

  1. I really enjoy using OSM for my projects! It can be a bit daunting to figure out how to use the data because there are so many different tools in the ecosystem. I wrote this article recently to help anyone looking to get started querying OSM: https://wcedmisten.fyi/post/how-to-query-osm/

  3. Very cool! I recently made a game kind of like AI "pictionary" where the user has to guess the "artist", subject, and description of a piece of art generated by stable diffusion: https://wcedmisten.fyi/project/paintingGuesser/ I tried to make something more general, but stable diffusion is fairly inconsistent in how well the output matches the semantics of the input.

  5. Hey ayocado, I have some experience with self-managed/self-hosted base maps. There are some modern tools that make the setup pretty easy (e.g. Protomaps, MapLibre) and you can still use a minimalist style similar to the CARTO one you have now. If you're interested in switching over, feel free to shoot me an email and I can try to help! Here are some demos [1][2] I've made without using any third-party map services.…

  9. It was a limitation of the web form the author mentioned[1]: > The device and company names are not standardized, and may have abbreviations, acronyms, or plain old typos. The website's search functionality does not provide fuzzy string matching, so finding a device often takes some trial and error. 11. I recently did a writeup [1] on the 510(k) FDA clearance process (which cleared this device for market). Basically this device was cleared through a DAG of other devices that were "substantially equivalent". I made a website to visualize these relationships, and any recalls that occurred in the parent devices. If anyone is curious about this particular device, see here [2] [1] https://wcedmisten.fyi/post/medical-dev…

  13. I just set up my own blog last week that's hosted on a $5/mo digitalocean droplet and uses cloudflare as a CDN and to provide SSL support. It's definitely more complex than raw HTML purists would prefer. I'm using NextJS with static site generation to generate static HTML from my React code. I'm also using MDX to automatically compile my articles, which are written in Markdown but I can embed React components in the…

  15. Not OP, but I started up a project running Postgres, a Python backend (with FastAPI), and a NextJS frontend on the cheapest DigitalOcean droplet. Hosting+domain came to $7.68/mo I can't say it's had very much production load testing, but using the site myself it seems to work fine. https://wcedmisten.fyi/post/stateful-webapp-on-7-68-budget/

  19. Tesla cars with their dashcam turned on collect enormous amounts of data. They have 4-6 cameras writing continuously to a USB flash drive. I wonder why we can't get folks to drive around and collect it, then use AI/automation to fill in great swaths of information automagically. EDIT: some people do similar things: - https://wcedmisten.fyi/post/dashcam-to-openstreetmap/ EDIT2: and maybe it goes the other way: - http…

  21. https://wcedmisten.fyi I like writing about my own projects that usually involve web scraping, OpenStreetMap, or visualizing interesting datasets. I've been at it for about a year, mostly to gain motivation to actually finish my projects. To that end it's been quite successful, and it's a great opportunity to practice writing.
