I did a git branch for my app ( https://www.wisecashhq.com/ ) - in 3 hours or so I was able to pass the tests and run the app properly. For larger apps (which I maintain as a freelance) I would wait a bit more though, since some gems will still have little bugfixes related to Rails 4 compatibility, most likely.

HN discussionFor higher end market (north of $900 for 7 hours of work), 100% remote, no agencies/only direct, no fixed price projects, I apply the advice I outlined here: https://www.wisecashhq.com/blog/how-to-have-clients-find-you... . EDIT: I've been freelancing since 2005, and 100% remote since 2010. Happy to answer questions!

HN discussionI just crossed 500$/mo with https://www.wisecashhq.com (cash flow forecasting for freelancers and small businesses, launched officially 2.5 months ago). This is far away from passive income since I'm actively working on it (I'm bootstrapping it + consulting/freelancing the other days).

HN discussionI don't know about Braintree, but I can report that for my SaaS app ( https://www.wisecashhq.com , currently priced in $ but France-based), I used Recurly ( https://www.recurly.com ) which handles EU VAT very nicely (including VAT changes happening in 2015). I use them together with Stripe as my gateway, it generates proper invoices and applies the rate of the buyer's country unless a valid VAT number has been provi…

HN discussionSharing a bit of my own experience: I used to do a lot of demos for my SaaS (usually 1 to 2 hour long, because it ended up in some form of coaching session on cash-flow forecasting habits), but after a while I realised that I got more churn from such users ultimately. I later replaced those demos (which I still do occasionally) by 2 things : - An in-app onboarding tour (fully self-service), implemented with mock dat…

HN discussionThis will not help the OP immediately, but for anyone to avoid this situation in the first place, there are a number of techniques (some quite easy) that can help, described in this article I wrote: https://www.wisecashhq.com/blog/how-to-have-clients-find-you... More short term, I would definitely try to find a single gig, maybe via some subcontracting or via sites like toptal, just to build some runway and to make…

HN discussionHighCharts [1] and HighStock [2] (which I use extensively on my SaaS app [3] - the home page shows a real screenshot) definitely allow gaps in the data. I can only warmly recommend both! (not affiliated with them in any way, they just do a great job). HN discussionI've been contracting, consulting & freelancing for the last 10 years (5 years completely remote). My advice is to avoid "searching contract work", but reverse the situation completely: make your new clients find you instead. I wrote about this in depth here: https://www.wisecashhq.com/blog/how-to-have-clients-find-you... . Sites /can/ work (I know people who make a good living off certain sites), but nothing will b…

HN discussionStart freelancing, then raise your rates and use my little calculator [1] to "make time", then work on side projects. Also: as someone who did a lot of side-projects over the last few years, my advice is "start a side product" instead (if you want to end up living out of it, that is). HN discussionIt's useful feedback, thanks! There is actually a lot more detail right under each of those sections (see the "learn more" link). For some reason it's not underlined, so I guess I have to fix this! Example link: https://www.wisecashhq.com/help/setting-up-a-recurring-trans... HN discussionI'm a freelance myself (since 2005). I ultimately scratched my own itch and created an app specifically for this: https://www.wisecashhq.com I built it pretty much for what you describe: to plan my future (it computes your runway & "time wealth"), adjust working hours as needed, "make time" for other topics, negotiate based on data etc. The goal is not to "track all expenses", but rather to make a reasonable forecas…

HN discussionI launched my first SaaS ( https://www.wisecashhq.com - cash flow forecasting for freelancers and SBOs) in private beta one year ago. I enabled the (upfront) paywall a couple of weeks ago and have currently 15 or so paying customers (the early adopters got a 20% lifetime discount).
