Why HN links it

HN readers link Wolfram Blog posts on the company's closed-source stance, Mathematica tricks and one-liners, and science and math explainers such as sonic booms, rational approximations and logo generation.

Recommended for · 6 comments
Called interesting, a nice story, and reasonable in its arguments; one commenter says it is worth a look, and another calls a similar logo project cool.123456
Criticised for · 5 comments
Called cringey, weak and self-serving; claims credit for code-as-data that Lisp had first; misjudged World Cup teams.12345

What Hacker News says?

  1. The article is a bit older, but metadata analytics can be used to "unveil" the key conspirators that led to what we today know as the "American Revolution"[1] - please note how little data they use to find out who calls the shots, and whom you might want to disappear if you wanted to keep the colonies closely aligned with George III. Widespread enough, this can be used to find dissidents today, suppressing ethically…

  3. The speed of sound actually decreases, and then increases again as you go up in altitude. So when they say faster than the speed of sound, they mean the local speed of sound (hence the sonic boom). This is explored (with graphs!) here for the case of Mr. Baumgartner's jump: http://blog.wolfram.com/2012/10/24/falling-faster-than-the-s...

There is an interesting article about the reasons why Wolfram decided against open source and why their products would not have been possible otherwise: https://blog.wolfram.com/2019/04/02/why-wolfram-tech-isnt-op... As much as I don’t like it either, I can understand their perspective and actually believe that it might have been very hard to create and sustain such a comprehensive, thoughtfully and consistently des…

Firstly, I remember watching a TED video[1] by Steven's brother Conrad, which was passionate about using computers for teaching Mathematics. Perhaps this Pi initiative is less commercial than philanthropic and was initiated by Conrad. Secondly, if you look at Wolfram's own blog post[2] on the Pi release of Mathema…

  21. I think you're missing the point about why the Wolfram Language is going to be useful on a PI. I don't think the majority case will be mathematics. See here for some ideas: http://blog.wolfram.com/2013/11/21/putting-the-wolfram-langu... And re free tools: I doubt very much that Sage has any mechanism for flashing LEDs through the GPIO pins of the Pi, or doing image processing on a RaspiCam, or balancing an inverted…

No they didn't and that's why I put those lagging open-source projects as examples to make readers imagine that an alternate-history-open-source Mathematica may have lagged behind like them too. I think you lost track of the argument put forth by th…
