What Hacker News says?

  1. Global Ping Statistics - https://wondernetwork.com/pings We have ~240 servers world wide, we get them all to ping each other every hour, and record the results. We've been generating them for years, they're a pain to store, we've made $0 with it. But I really like the data we're getting. We recently moved a lot of the legacy data into S3 to save our own backup & restore process ( https://wonderproxy.com/blog/moving-…

  3. Global Ping Data - https://wondernetwork.com/pings We've got servers in 200+ cities around the world, and ask them to ping each other every hour. Currently it takes our servers in Tokyo and London about 226ms to ping each other. We've got some downloadable datasets here if you want to play with them: https://wonderproxy.com/blog/a-day-in-the-life-of-the-intern...

  5. I launched WonderProxy ( https://wonderproxy.com ) while employed. I actually launched it to solve a problem a co-worker was having. He was a friend, and kept having to stay late to try and test aspects of our website using various free web proxies. I bought a few VPS in different countries, gave him the password, and it was an instant hit. They were my first customer, and are still a customer several years later. I…

  7. We offer VPN as a side thing to help our customers who are testing their websites from around the world. At the behest of some friends I added VPN as its own plan. A choice you need to make really early on when you're offering a VPN is how much data you want to log. Eventually someone will do something on your service that pisses someone else off. That could be torrenting, spam, defrauding the elderly, etc. Ideally…

  9. If you'd rather not have to mess around with stuff, and have $5 to spare, we can help: https://wonderproxy.com/signup/vpn It was a huge pain in the neck to get native support on Mac & various windows flavours. But our normal clients needed a good solution for testing flash & silverlight apps.

  11. I'm a programmer, and I also own WonderProxy ( https://wonderproxy.com/ ) and Yes. I had someone from a rather large company email me, all super interested, get them started on a trial then they'll pay like tomorrow. They just need to get started ASAP!!!!!!ones!!!! That turned into needing to talk to some business guy, who absolutely needed to talk to me on the phone, so he could ask me for our address and a phone n…

  13. Probably around 8 months - 1 year for us ( https://wonderproxy.com ). My co-founder and I were both employed full time elsewhere so we used revenue to expand constantly, becoming profitable wasn't on our short to-do list.

  15. Hosting. I'm a co-founder at https://wonderproxy.com , so our product is having servers all over. It starts to add up after a while. Jumping down an order of magnitude we've got: software, bank fees/processing fees, insurance, taxes. We were really happy when our salaries passed our hosting bills and stayed there.

  18. I used to work for eDonkey as their support minion, a file sharing program of yesteryear. We had forums, and a user there was far more helpful to all the newbs than I was. We started chatting from time to time, then more often, he even came up to meet me while I was down in NYC for the summer. We kept in touch, he helped me manage a dedicated server I'd bought somewhere. I felt bad because he was managing it and I w…

  20. I'm a co-founder at WonderProxy https://wonderproxy.com/ I launched it to help a friend who was in QA. Our own site doesn't do GeoIP stuff, so I don't need it. I enjoy working on it, have quite enjoyed the site re-write ( https://admin.wonderproxy.com/ ) but my day to day life doesn't need to route traffic through Brazil.
