Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Linked on HN for a post on speeding up a Common Lisp jq replacement, and for its website colophon page describing the site's technology. One commenter praises the speedup; others cite the colophon as an example.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I don't see why my point is that hard to see: the "do one thing" part of the UNIX philosophy is a good ideal to aim for, even if often ignored in favour of a more convenient kitchen sink approach. I then just mentioned that a good majority of these useful Rust tools (I really like hyperfine and oxipng, for example) don't seem to care much about it. Some example of that idea I use every day is https://codemadness.org…

  5. Also made a post some time ago about the issue: https://world-playground-deceit.net/blog/2024/09/bourne_shel... About the commands that don't buffer, this is either implementation dependent or even wrong in the case of cat (cf https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9799919799/utilities/c... and `-u`). Massive pain that POSIX never included an official way to manage this. Not mentioned is input buffering, that would g…

  7. And it's yet another terrible DSL that you must learn when it could have been a language everybody already knows, like Python. The query part isn't even that well done, compared to XPath/JSONPath. I said goodbye to it a few weeks ago, personally ( https://world-playground-deceit.net/blog/2025/03/a-common-li... https://world-playground-deceit.net/blog/2025/03/speeding-up... )

  9. Trying to bring the finishing touches to a Common Lisp SSG I made during a handful of vacation afternoons ( https://git.sr.ht/~q3cpma/make-website ) and filling the resulting website ( https://world-playground-deceit.net/ ) with more content. More motivated by #2 now that the generator does 99% of what I need.

  13. Looks like this post I made can serve again: https://world-playground-deceit.net/blog/2024/10/why-tcl.htm... But to be honest, while I feel like Perl has a lot of advantages (full perlre, full access to POSIX APIs, slightly better performance), I still can't look at it and keep my last meal down. Tcl having an event loop and Tk being native are pretty nice too.

  17. Fun thing, I finished something quite similar in a week: https://git.sr.ht/~q3cpma/make-website ; down to the page language using the macro DSL of https://github.com/ruricolist/spinneret via runtime compilation of the (compile nil (lambda () ...)) kind. It's just HTML, other than that. Obviously very tailor-made for my website ( https://world-playground-deceit.net/ ) but I plan on improving that part once I'm fully…

  19. Usually more about the technology behind it than about the site itself. eg: I consider this a colophon https://world-playground-deceit.net/about/website.html ...and this recent link through n.y.c came through when I searched as having a "Colophon" for the project: https://ratfactor.com/snobol/ ...the wiki link talks a little bit about "website colophons" as well.

  21. GC's strength is not only in the ease of writing but at also reading, since you don't need to interleave allocation and business logic everywhere (be it through types or imperative code). GC simply is the only way to approach the clarity of pseudo-code in real code. That's one of my later realizations concerning the subject ( https://world-playground-deceit.net/blog/2024/11/how-i-learn... )

  25. I meant "general" with regards to the material, not the listener. I have myself digitized a few rare cases like Celtic Frost's Monotheist because the CD was horrid and I know pop and rock suffered much more from the phenomenon, but unless the music was released first as a vinyl then got later butchered on CD (so before '85~88), it's very rare to have a situation where the vinyl is objectively better. One such case I…

  26. I think it's appropriate to link to my blog post about building such a NAS but with very different technologies: dm-integrity, mdadm and XFS. The reason being that as a C/C++ dev following OpenZFS development closely, I found the focus on ginormous features over general stability and the constant problems due to the SPL/separate page cache too worrying. Sure, I traded the convenience of kitchen sink (or Swiss army k…
