  3. Lots of good entries, I'll add a few that haven't been mentioned yet: - ncdu, to find out which files and folders take up most of the disk space [1] - julia, because scientific programming was never so fun and fast [2] - midnight commander, because a TUI implementing Norton Commander dual-pane view is so useful! [3] - lazarus, because creating multi-platform desktop apps couldn't be simpler [4] - zstandard, its perf…

  7. I quite like this list, there are a number of utilities here that I already use on a daily basis. There are also a few utilities that I like that weren't on this list, or some alternatives to what was shown. Some off the top of my head: - nnn[0] (C) - A terminal file manager, similar to ranger. It allows you to navigate directories, manipulate files, analyze disk usage, and fuzzy open files. - ncdu[1] (C) - ncurses…

  11. I'd recommend ncdu[1]. It's very fast, has vi-like bindings, and allows you to easily delete items right there. I use it frequently. [1] https://dev.yorhel.nl/ncdu/scr

  13. XML isn’t hard to parse, sure, but you still have to do parsed entities and default attribute values for the (mandatory) “internal DTD subset”, don’t you? If you omit that, then sure, the rest[1] is basically in the ballpark of JSON. But for a full parser you still have to do a full textual macro system so you have to allocate given untrusted input so ... so now you’re basically doing a good chunk of a simple compil…

  21. Tools like rdfind and rmlint breathed new life into my SSD by hardlinking duplicate files after video editing software helpfully duplicated huge videos on import. https://rdfind.pauldreik.se/ https://github.com/sahib/rmlint There are great GUI visualizers for disk space, like WizTree/Baobab; for the command line I've had success with ncdu. https://dev.yorhel.nl/ncdu

  25. These certainly aren't forgotten, but I like: * `ranger` file manager: https://ranger.github.io/ * `ncdu` for visualising disk usage: https://dev.yorhel.nl/ncdu * `htop` process monitor: https://htop.dev/ I just find them very intuitive, and information-dense while not being overwhelming.

  27. A parser for what most people think of as XML can be fairly simple, certainly simpler than a performant or even just error-tolerant parser for HTML. Though Yxml[1] is probably overdoing it, what with its lack of Unicode handling or tree construction, a couple of tens of kilobytes seems like the right order of magnitude to me. Heavier than JSON, but not drastically so, unless you decide you also need three types of s…
