Why HN links it

Comments link the blog as a personal notebook, one by a Perl-focused author, and discuss Lua scripting in Nginx with OpenResty. Neither comment judges the writing itself.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I have done something similar in a Lua IDE: http://notebook.kulchenko.com/zerobrane/live-coding-in-lua-b... . The IDE actually supports live coding with several Lua toolkits (Love2d, Moai, Gideros, and others; here is an example with Love2d: http://notebook.kulchenko.com/zerobrane/live-coding-with-lov...

  3. It looks awesome. Being inspired by one of Bret Victor's videos, I built something similar for my (at that time) 7-8 year old in Lua: http://notebook.kulchenko.com/zerobrane/live-coding-in-lua-b... . Here is another screencast where you can see a game developer (Andy Bower) live-coding a simple app running on iPad in 25 minutes ( http://notebook.kulchenko.com/zerobrane/gideros-live-coding-... ).

  5. I've been working on extending ZeroBrane Studio (the IDE mentioned in the google groups discussion you referenced) and its debugger and has posted instructions on how to debug OpenResty Lua scripts with it: http://notebook.kulchenko.com/zerobrane/debugging-openresty-... . It's an early work, but you can set breakpoints, step through the code, run ngx commands remotely, inspect stack/variables, and do all the things…

  7. That's entirely my father's ( http://notebook.kulchenko.com ) fault. His favorite language is Perl, and he got me started on it many years ago (2000-2001?). I've recently moved on to Ruby, but Perl was my go-to for a long time.

  9. I tend to always use OpenResty for a certain set of tasks these days. Notably, when it is mostly about lightweight data processing. I.e. an API that reads from a DB, transforms some fields and returns json, or a simple proxy server that slightly modifies the data (or just returns it). Or, performing simple calculations based on a few inputs. All this usually just requires a few lines of code and due to the nature of…

  11. Look great! I've done something similar with exactly the same approach of fully reevaluating Love functions, which allows changing the app behavior on the fly: http://notebook.kulchenko.com/zerobrane/live-coding-with-lov... . This is only running on a desktop (as it's controlled from the ZeroBrane Studio IDE running on the same machine) and allows both changing the source code and using virtual sliders on any number…
