HN discussionI'm not sure if it's as much a bottleneck in Postgres as it is in MySQL, but I've just written a tome[1] on more effective offset/limit pagination by using something called a deferred join. The main problem with offset / limit pagination is that the database is forced to fetch and discard more and more rows as you get deeper into the pages. The trick to getting offset / limit to be faster is to reduce the amount of…

HN discussionThere are ways to mitigate the (although not eliminate) the slowing down of offset/limit pagination in later pages. The technique is called a "deferred join" and it is most effective in MySQL. The basic idea is to paginate as little data as necessary, and then do a self-join to get the rest of the data for a single page. HN discussionI wrote up a whole post on how I use Evernote and IFTTT. My favorite is the monthly screenshots of my Last.FM listening history. http://aaronfrancis.com/blog/2013/2/26/how-i-use-evernote-an...

HN discussionI have a pretty in depth write up of how I use IFTTT and Evernote to collect my digital breadcrumbs. I particularly like that every month I get a screenshot of my last.fm chart. It's amazing how much music can spark your memory. http://aaronfrancis.com/blog/2013/2/26/how-i-use-evernote-an...

HN discussionThis is one of my favorite recently-discovered blogs. His posts are so in depth and the whole thing is beautiful and slick. I too prefer for my blog to be closed-source, for many of the same reasons. Mine is decidedly less sexy, it's just Laravel + Markdown, but I did write about it recently: https://aaronfrancis.com/2021/blogging-with-markdown-in-lara...

HN discussionI've written a lot on Yii/Heroku if you care to look: http://aaronfrancis.com/?tag=Yii . I love Yii, it's certainly my go-to for PHP frameworks at this point. It's super powerful.
