What Hacker News says?
AWS's Cloud primitives are certainly better. Of course it's not FOSS, though it proves orchestration can be done simpler. https://ably.com/blog/no-we-dont-use-kubernetes For local development (a must imo), just rock a docker-compose.yml that emulates your Cloud orchestrated with terraform/cloudformation.

HN discussionthe biggest drawback with SSE, even when unidirectional comm is sufficient is > SSE is subject to limitation with regards to the maximum number of open connections. This can be especially painful when opening various tabs as the limit is per browser and set to a very low number (6). https://ably.com/blog/websockets-vs-sse SharedWorker could be one way to solve this, but lack of Safari support is a blocker, as usual.…

HN discussionDepends upon which job interview you are going to. If is a startup, use some buzzwords like cloud native, devops etc. Check their sentiments towards kubernetes. On a serious note, You might have to jump on the kubernetes bandwagon whether you like it or not as many of the companies are serious investing their resources. Having spoken to various companies from series A to Enterprise. I do see the kubernetes adoption…

HN discussionNo, this is from one of the intermittent successful responses. You can see it on https://ably.com/support also, which seems to be still up. And cloudflare caching of some previous successful page fetch seems to be turned off as well. A cf-cache-status header of "DYNAMIC" means "This resource is not cached by default and there are no explicit settings configured to cache it." .

HN discussionCloudflare is in front of the blog, but they seem to have purposefully disabled caching both in the browser via Cache-Control headers[1], and apparently in Cloudflare too[2]. [1] See, for example, https://ably.com/support , which is currently still up. [2] The cf-cache-status header says "DYNAMIC", which means "This resource is not cached by default and there are no explicit settings configured to cache it."

HN discussionThe ElectricSQL concept of 'shapes' is interesting. Right now, a shape is just a single table with some column filters and a where clause. The shape is defined on the fly in the query string. Electric does single table sync of those 'shapes' a lot like Supabase realtime. I work as part of the team building Ably LiveSync, a competitor in this space. Our postgres connector[0] works in the opposite way by taking rows f…

HN discussionOur customers use Ably across such a diverse set of use cases, but here's a few: 1. Sports events streaming live updates (see https://ausopen.com/live-scores , we are streaming live scores for the Tennis Australian Open right now). Companies like Toyota even use us to facilitate engineers tweaking the performance characteristics of their cars in realtime remotely. 2. Edtech - we have numerous customers using us to d…

HN discussionWe are monitoring it closely and super excited about what WebTransport will provide, which is both a more reliable and in many cases more performant transport. However, much like WebSockets, it's still quite low level and only provides a basic communication protocol. As such, like we have done with SSE, HTTP, Websockets and MQTT, our service focusses on what developers can enable on top of these lower level transpor…

HN discussionBig question! It deserves its own blog post haha. CRDTs can be the answer. We actually wrote about them recently ( https://ably.com/blog/crdts-distributed-data-consistency-cha... ), and there is more coming soon as our Chief Of Scientist and his team are researching CRDTs and building demos!

HN discussionI am one of the co-founders of https://ably.com . We have built a Serverless websockets platform that is near infinitely scalable and designed to handle the complexity you’re describing such as cluster resizing, connection failures, automatic sharding and reallocations using hash rings across our global edge service etc. I’d be really interested to hear why you wouldn’t consider offloading this to a service like our…

HN discussionInitially I thought I would be able to do it with webRTC but it turns out you still need some kind of specific server to connect clients. Instead I cheated a little bit and used a messaging service https://ably.com/ . It was easy to setup and use, and their free plan is generous. Another thing I didn't achieve is to find a RNG I could configure with a seed, so amongst my client I have a special one, the "host" who i…

HN discussionThis looks super useful for anything requiring optimistic updates, but how do you get data from triplit into another db? Perhaps for analytics or audit purposes. With something like electric-sql you can just use one of the many Postgres tools, and other local-first options like https://ably.com/livesync have database adaptors for replication. I think this is an important requirement whenever you build your own datab…

HN discussionAbly’s LiveSync ( https://ably.com/livesync ) is conceptually designed to solve exactly this problem by providing a database connector that subscribes to changes committed using the outbox pattern, and a models SDK to subscribe to those changes in your app. It’s early days as it’s just been released, but at the core the team’s goal in designing that was to solve this exact problem. Interested if this is meets your n…

HN discussionWebSub's biggest advantage from what I can tell is minimizing the load on the publishers. Instead of them having to manage webhooks to send out to, or having hundreds of thousands of clients polling them every minute, they can let a Hub do all the work for them.
