Why HN links it

Commenters mostly mention AdGuard as an ad blocker and link its blog for posts on browser extension changes, such as Chrome's Manifest V3 and Safari content blocker limits, and its DNS 2.0 open-sourcing.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Chrome didn't remove ad-block entirely, they deprecated an API that allows direct control; extensions now have to load filters into the browser itself, which will do the blocking. Safari actually did the same recently[1], so it's not an alternative if you dislike this move by Chrome. The only difference seems to be the limit of rules (30k for Chrome vs 50k for Safari, whereas some lists used by uBO have over 75k). […

  3. I've been a happy user of Adguard for over 5 years, on all my devices, so I am luckily unaffected by this. So far it seems to be the only general solution that can inject cosmetic filters into network requests while blocking on a request (not dns-only) level. https://adguard.com/en/blog/mv2-extensions-no-longer-alterna...

  5. I recently switched to Wipr [0]. It’s dead simple to use, and will auto update its filter lists in the background. It’s a one time purchase, not a subscription. Adguard [1] is a decent free option. I also use a Pi-hole [2] on my network. That blocks ads in apps (not in the browser) like Letterboxd for example. 13. Other similar filter lists: EasyList Cookie: https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easylist-cookie.t... AdGuard Annoyances filter: http://adguard.com/filters.html#annoyances (There is also "Fanboy’s Annoyance", but it blocks more than just cookie notifications. For example, it blocks social media share buttons which I use a lot. So I don't use it.)

  15. > I searched and came across a list on Tom's Hardware of the best ad blockers of 2017 For some reason Tom's article is missing Pi-Hole [1] and AdGuard [2] which are network and computer-level ad blockers respectively. Both are good for people who regularly use multiple browsers on multiple devices since there isn't any need to install an ad blocker extension for each one then. 29. Doing some more digging, apparently AdGuard just created a URL tracking filter a couple of weeks ago that we should be able to enable in either the AdGuard or Ublock Origin (or perhaps other ad-blocking) Firefox mobile addons eventually: https://adguard.com/en/blog/adguard-url-tracking-filter.html Or you can manually add the filter now.
