HN discussionI like the effort started by Objective Development (creators of little snitch) called IPA: Internet Access Policy [0]. An IAP is a document that defines to what endpoints does an application connect too. Apple should get on this bandwagon and enforce it and the OS level, so that any application must ship this IAP document and only be allowed to connect the endpoints listed in that document. Furthermore a user should…

HN discussionI had toyed with using Little Snitch, https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html , to let me know what connections each program is making but after like a day it was just too complex to get going. Wonder if the LitteSnitch list of procs had the Zoom Daemon.

HN discussionI use Little Snitch[1] (and its sibling Micro Snitch[2]) for filtering connections at the system level. I don't interact with it too often though, because I rarely install new apps. Not to say /etc/hosts doesn't work, these days I just find I prefer things with better UX. --- [1] https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html [2] https://www.obdev.at/products/microsnitch/index.html

HN discussionIf you have an intel mac, you can still install LS 4.x (once you have booted into recovery to permit the kext) on Big Sur. HN user miles pointed this out recently, and it is awesome. https://www.obdev.at/support/littlesnitch/245913651253917 It's 5.x that uses the new restricted APIs. I'm going to contact the developers and ask for an ARM build of 4.x so the same trick will work on M1, at least until Apple forbids al…

HN discussionThere is a section about being required by the EU to determine location for VAT collection purposes. If their payment processor can’t determine your location sufficiently, then they have to collect data identifying your location and store it for tax/proof purposes. That’s something they don’t want to ever have to do, obviously. Here’s a link to the policy: https://www.obdev.at/privacy/index.html

HN discussionI can't imagine using a Mac without Little Snitch: https://obdev.at/products/littlesnitch Among other things, it is disturbing how chatty a lot of things are. (Did you know Apple Mail keeps track of which account you email different people with and wants to send that to configuration.apple.com, even if you have carefully disabled everything Icloud related?) There's a similar tool for Linux, but I usually keep a netw…

HN discussionA small aside: on the Mac, Micro Snitch [1] can let you know about any app that accesses the mic or webcam. It can use overlays, notifications, and/or just the systray to indicate that an app is using the mic/webcam. It also has an activity log that can you show past use. HN discussionI got Micro Snitch [1] as part of a bundle with Little Snitch years ago and have just had it running for cases like this. I'm fortunate to not have run into this issue, but I like the peace of mind of knowing exactly if I do. [1]: https://obdev.at/products/microsnitch/index.html
