Why HN links it
HN readers link her posts on running Linux apps in VMs with virtio-wl and on the background to Spectrum OS, her compartmentalized Linux project. Comments cite these posts as sources without judging the writing.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
Yeah. Personally, I'm crossing my fingers for SpectrumOS[0] to make things a bit easier. As the developer notes on her website[1]: <qyliss> I have embarked on the ultimate yak shave <qyliss> it started with "I wish I could securely store passwords on my computer" <qyliss> And now I am at the "I have funding to build my own operating system" level [0]: https://spectrum-os.org/ [1]: https://alyssa.is/about/

HN discussionIt is worth noting that ChromeOS runs Linux software in a neat way to isolate it from the host OS. It runs it in Debian-based KVM VMs, and it uses virtio-wayland[1] to pass the applications through to the host compositor, making them feel as if they are not running in a VM. This architecture means that ChromeOS can preserve its readonly system partition, delta updates, and fast boot times while being able to run any…

HN discussionAlyssa wrote some background behind the project: https://alyssa.is/leaving-freeagent/ “When I had a call with [the project sponsor] NLnet recently, I was told ‘you work for the internet now’. And that evoked the most powerful feeling of purpose and drive I’ve ever felt in my life.” “Although my funding is for Spectrum, I expect to be able to work on free software much more broadly over the next year. Certainly, a lo…

on “Spectrum OS: a declarative, reproducible, compartmentalized Linux”> Many will point out that a Linux phone is less secure than Android or iOS, but that highly depends on your personal threat model. Linux phones and their apps are all open-source and do not depend on ads or surveillance to sustain some nefarious business model, which means there is much privacy to be won. Meanwhile here I am on my Linux machine, constantly anxious that sooner or later one of my bazillion npm and pi…

on “Daily driving a Linux phone, but why?”Here's the link from the article: https://alyssa.is/using-virtio-wl/ It doesn't really have a better name. It was written by Google to allow Android apps to run inside a VM on ChromeOS. Although it does work with mainline Linux, Google is understandably not motivated to invest effort in branding virtwl.ko with a non-cryptic name, or marketing it as its own project independent of ChromeOS. AFIAK nobody outside of Goo…

on “Qubes-Lite with KVM and Wayland”> I like being able to run a Linux desktop in a VM on windows and "extend" to another monitor with VM X apps rendering to a Cygwin Xorg instance. Wayland can't do that. This should be possible with virtio-wayland: https://alyssa.is/using-virtio-wl/ It's pretty new and not used outside of Chrome OS (to run Linux apps) at the moment though.
