What Hacker News says?

 1. You mean like using Google GSuite for SSO? In the context of this authentication-related outage, it's a funny suggestion. https://tailscale.com/kb/1013/sso-providers

 3. > I can see both sides. If you're a startup that needs to be able to scale quickly if product market fit is achieved, the cloud really saves your bacon. Depends on the team size of the said startup [0]. In my opinion, tech-shops are better off using new-age cloud providers like fly.io / glitch.com / render.com / railway.app / replit.com / deno.com / workers.dev etc [1]. 7. Litestream author here. That's a good question. There's not very good visibility into open source usage so it's hard to say unless folks write blog posts about it. For example, I know Tailscale runs part of their infrastructure with SQLite & Litestream[1]. I wrote a database called BoltDB before and I have no idea how widespread it is exactly. It's used in a lot of open source projects like Consul & etcd but I don't…

 15. https://tailscale.com/ requires it, as do many other apps that explicitly "don't want to become identity providers and would rather offload that burden to someone else".

 17. I would recommend trying to set up tailscale[0] in the servers instead of a VPN, its similar to the reply about SSH ProxyForwarding but it has a lot more tricks under the hood. Of course you need somewhere (aka an AWS server in eg. europe) to connect to. Also have a look at their blog post about NAT traversal for some potential inspiration: https://tailscale.com/blog/how-nat-traversal-works/ Good luck out there! I'l…

 23. All the new products around WireGuard. I'm so tired of running VPNs. NAT traversal with protocols like STUN, TURN and ICE are going to allow point-to-point networks for all the clients. https://tailscale.com/ https://portal.cloud/app/subspace

 29. I agree that sending cleartext over the internet in this day and age is a bad idea. But "encrypt all communication at the application layer" doesn't have to be the only solution. There's also "encrypt communication at the network layer," as discussed here for example: https://tailscale.com/blog/remembering-the-lan/ I have a suspicion that this will prove to be a better abstraction than application-level encry…
