  3. This used to be the case. However, they have published docs on their hardware. For instance, https://gpuopen.com/amd-gpu-architecture-programming-documen... Their driver is also in-tree: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU It may or may not be as good as Intel. I don't have the depth of experience there right now. It looks like AMD and Intel GPUs should be roughly similar in terms of support / out of the box exp…

  7. Well, the Radeon VII looks like it is around the 1080 Ti / 2080 for $699. I think the main issue with AMD is that their compute drivers are clearly behind NVidia's. However, their ROCm development is now on Github, so we can publicly see releases and various development actions. AMD has been active on Github, so the drivers are clearly improving. But I think it is surprising to see just how far behind they are. ROCm…

  11. I must be going stupid, show me the code?! Where is any of this? I find a bunch of press releases, but.. there is no code, anywhere. (Edit: for anyone else struggling, expand the arrow on the top left. Or go directly to e.g) http://gpuopen.com/professional-compute/ (That said, a bunch of the repositories are just binary dumps. Like, this isn't what Git is for AMD.)

  27. For context, Alchemist was SIMD8. They made a big deal out of this at the alchemist launch if I recall correctly since they thought it would be more efficient. Unfortunately, it turned out to be less efficient. Tom Petersen did a bunch of interviews right before the Intel B580 launch. In the hardware unboxed interview, he mentioned it, but accidentally misspoke. I must have interpreted his misspeak as meaning games…
