Why HN links it
HN readers link Arram Sabeti's GPT-3 experiments: AI-written op-eds, comedy writing, uncertainty prompts and a Dr. Seuss-style piece. Commenters cite them as examples of what GPT-3 can do.

Arram Sabeti — I started a company that's done half a billion dollars in sales. Now I make strange, beautiful things, write, and meditate.

What Hacker News says?
This is really interesting because I was just looking at gibberish detection using GPT models. Seems like mitigating AI with AI doesn't sound like it's all that secure since you can probably mess with the gibberish detection similarly - Or maybe the 'secret language' as they're calling it here passes GPT gibberish detection? HN discussionDon't want to be too critical, interesting experiment, but I found the story and pictures rather boring. I think it shows that it is still a tool, and can be used creatively, or not, depending on the creative skill of the artist. Contrast this with the now classic piece: https://arr.am/2020/07/31/human-intelligence-an-ai-op-ed/

HN discussionHm, maybe he really is intelligent, but the facts and logic are missing... FWIW, I do think that GPT3 is smarter than humans. But one thing I learned from observing it that being smarter does not necessarily mean being better with logic and facts. It's great as a storytelling system, and because it is so much smarter, you never know whether it is just BSing you in storytelling mode or it is actually deadly serious.…

HN discussionThis is why it’s fair to call some prompt designs bad. With a bad prompt you can’t really judge anything from the response. But better prompt design can uncover interesting behaviors. GPT-3 will generally not reject a prompt as nonsense or unreasonable, and will instead do a straight-faced continuation, probably because it has been trained on plenty of jokes, satires, dream sequences, etc. But if you specifically gi…

HN discussionI sensed this too. So I looked at the author's profile. Now I'm even more confused: From https://arr.am : Stuff That’s Happened to Me I took a photo that may now be one of the most reproduced images in history. I once came up with an idea with a friend that accidentally became a national TV ad featuring Nicki Minaj, Serena Williams, Usher, Kylie and Kendall Jenner. I once crashed a fashion show, pretended to be a mo…

HN discussionI think there is a confidence score actually! Most blogs about it don't show them but this one went into it: https://arr.am/2020/07/25/gpt-3-uncertainty-prompts/ It's really cool how the uncertainty prompts alter the confidence associated with the next words. I guess I'm not disagreeing with you in the abstract that a theoretically strong enough AI could identify bad papers, especially if it had some help for 'real'…

HN discussionThis criticism was addressed by Nick Cammarata of OpenAI, who said that: > “it’s all about the prelude before the conversation. You need to tell it what the AI is and is not capable [of]. It’s not trying to be right, it’s trying to complete what it thinks the AI would do :)” He did some "prompt engineering" and came up with: > ‘This is a conversation between a human and a brilliant AI. If a question is “normal” the…

on “Why do we all fall for AI-generated language?”Being the author of The Program, a fiction podcast described by fans as "a love child of Black Mirror and NPR", I've been following news around GPT-3 very closely. So I decided to make an episode depicting a fictionalized origin story of GPT-3. The twist is that I incorporated actual text generated by GPT-3 to tell the narrative (even the episode title has been generated by it!) To this end, I used four excellent ar…

on “Show HN: My fiction podcast about GPT-3 incorporating HN discussions”Hmm. Holding one category steady and checking the others invariably reveals a combination that hasn't been generated (like in dozens of tries I didn't get one pregenerated result), so you definitely need to figure out how to fund more prompt results. One thing you could try is to treat this as a straightforward content farm and sell ads or sponsorship on the site. Using Google AdSense won't work since they prohibit…
