What Hacker News says?

  1. At least for phone interviews, the bias doesn't exist or goes the other way: From http://blog.interviewing.io/we-built-voice-modulation-to-mas... : After running the experiment, we ended up with some rather surprising results. Contrary to what we expected (and probably contrary to what you expected as well!), masking gender had no effect on interview performance with respect to any of the scoring criteria (would adv…

  3. People have tried that... specifically to show that women were being discriminated against, but guess what happened when it was implemented? They found that contrary to their initial hypothesis, women with voices modulated to sound like men were still not getting hired at the same rate as the men masked to sound like women. Not only that, but they found women modulated to sound like men did worse than unmodulated wo…

I always end up linking this piece in response to people like you, and here I am again. These folks have real data on lots of interviews, and have done some analysis on them: http://blog.interviewing.io/you-cant-fix-diversity-in-tech-w... 11. Excellent question. There was an article a few years ago about an interviewing platform that tried using voice modulation to play with the gender of candidates: "Contrary to what we expected (and probably contrary to what you expected as well!), masking gender had no effect on interview performance with respect to any of the scoring criteria (would advance to next round, technical ability, problem solving ability).…

  15. Or even if the number of women just stays the same. Is the effort to level the playing field then deemed a 'failure' if the results don't change in the way they're expected to? That's the important question here, especially since there have now been preliminary experiments in tech interviews suggesting such an outcome is not implausible: http://blog.interviewing.io/we-built-voice-modulation-to-mas...

  17. > many men have a sexist bias towards men. Proof? Gender neutralized experiments find a great variety of results, with sometimes a bias in favor of women and sometimes a bias in favor of men. There is no consistency here that can be seen as proof that men are always biased towards men. I'm not aware of any scientific studies in the tech field, but this layman experiment in tech with voice masking for phone interview…

Momentary blackouts happen - rarely. Funny thing -- these folks have, y'know, actual data on this stuff: http://blog.interviewing.io/you-cant-fix-diversity-in-tech-w... Choice quote: As you can see, roughly 25% of interviewees are consistent in their performance, but the rest are all over the place. And over a third of people with a high mean (>=3) technical performance bombed at least one interview.

  29. You can alter the audio signal to mask gender: https://blog.interviewing.io/we-built-voice-modulation-to-ma... Similar tech could be used to mask accents. I suspect the real reason people are so hesitant to anonymize interviews is that the disparities will persist - or even grow larger - and it'll be more difficult to ascribe it to racism or sexism.
