What Hacker News says?

  1. https://simpleanalytics.com/ Says this on their homepage: We don't use cookies or collect any personal data. So no cookie banners, GDPR, CCPA, or PECR to worry about. Seems like a cool company/project to me. But, it's not free :( $19/mo Still thought it's worth pointing out.

  3. Over the last few months I have had ~30,0000 visits to my website, almost entirely from HN, and I was disheartened to find that 52% of visitors were using Chrome[1]. Given the pro-open-web and anti-FAANG sentiments that's shared on HN I had expected slightly different results. [1]: https://simpleanalytics.com/vishnu.tech?start=2019-10-18&end...

  5. For who needs a summary of what is happening in the EU [1] 1. Since 2020, it's illegal to send personal data to the US because of the invalidation of the Privacy Shield [2] 2. Google said it was okay in the EU to use anonymized IP addresses 3. The Austrian Data Protection Authority (DSB) [3] ruled differently and waived most of the arguments raised by Google. The DSB ruled that even anonymized IP addresses are perso…

  13. Regarding forbidden countries, it’s not forbidden in the Netherlands, yet. They will announce a verdict in a form of a report by the end of 2022 [1]. To give people an option and pink something else over Google Analytics, I have built an alternative, Simple Analytics [2]. It doesn’t use cookies or any form of tracking and you get still the useful data that 80% of the website owners need. [1] https://autoriteitpersoo…

  15. It is. Most startups in the EU have to use more and more businesses in the EU. The selection is little, so way more changes to succeed if your EU based and serve both markets. I run Simple Analytics [1], which is a privacy-first analytics business from the Netherlands. I see a lot of business from the EU just because we are from the EU as well. 19. Interestingly, according to [1] there were only ~11k visitors from Hackernews for a post on the front page that had ~1k comments. I would've estimated the visitor/comment ratio to be much, much higher. [1] https://simpleanalytics.com/istheshipstillstuck.com?utm_sour...

  23. Thanks for mentioning Simple Analytics [1]. We are at this point indeed only cloud based. We believe we need to make a business case/profit first before putting a lot of extra work in a open source version and maybe failing with the business. It's a dream to make it open source, but not at this time. We are very firm on our values. We will never sell your data. We have many ways to get your raw data out of our syste…

  25. Yes! There are many options! Log parsing is an option. There are self hosted options. There are also services like https://simpleanalytics.com/ (I have not used them or know much about them tbh). Personally, on my recent projects I start without analytics. If I want to measure health or growth, I define my own "metrics" and use sql or logs to generate. I don't need to know what country you are in. I don't need to kn…

My side project https://playtoearn.one/ is not making $500/month yet, but it's getting there: a tiny bit more than $400 for this month It's getting around 250-300 visitors a day, and in a high paying niche I started using "classic" ads - which were/are making next to nothing - but just signed a deal with a direct client for 400$ for 3 weeks of displaying his game on the site, on the top banner There are so many play…
