HN discussionDon't forget eForth, which I believe is a better, and more "Forthy" implementation than JonesForth is, though not as easy to understand for a newcomer. http://www.exemark.com/FORTH/eForthOverviewv5.pdf https://www.forth.org/OffeteStore/1013_eForthAndZen.pdf Another outstanding resources are the post from Bradford J. Rodriguez. Can't write a Forth implementation without going through the wisdom that's condensed in th…

HN discussionOh I love FORTH. Good set of articles here called Moving FORTH by Brad Rodriguez discussing the implementation of FORTH on various legacy ISAs. Worth a read to understand the internals and beauty of the simplicity of it: http://www.bradrodriguez.com/papers/moving1.htm And then there's CollapseOS: http://collapseos.org

HN discussionI also wrote a forth system for the Z80 TI calculator series when I was in high school, about 20 years ago now (wow). Very happy to see young people still fooling with this stuff, despite the ubiquity of smart phones etc. I just uploaded the code to github: https://github.com/hoytech/tiforth To anyone else interested in really understanding forth, Brad Rodriguez's "Moving Forth" series is the best I've ever read (an…

HN discussion For those trying to grok Forth implementation, I cannot recommend Brad Rodriguez' "Moving Forth" [1] series enough. But my favorite one is "1st, 3rd and almost 4th" [2]. Oh, and Loeliger's classic book on the subject [3]. HN discussionSee "Moving Forth": https://www.bradrodriguez.com/papers/moving1.htm The "interpreter" is just the macro that handles execution of the next subroutine in a threaded program. As in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threaded_code It might only be a call instruction, or a pointer increment and a jump. If you have to move the pointer to the working register to increment it, that's three instructions.

HN discussionR. G. Loeliger Threaded Interpretive Languages Their Design And Implementation[1] is an amazing book, since it was out of print, I printed it on a good 160gsm a4 paper, and I randomly open it every few weeks just to read through it. I strongly recommend it, even if you are not interested in Forth. I have been programming in all kinds of languages, from assembly to clojure, but in 25 years I never programmed stack la…

HN discussionIt would be more accurate to describe a metacompiler as a cross compiler to the machine an interpreted Forth is implemented on. I recommend Moving Forth [1] for the full explanation. (That's the part that addresses metacompliers, the rest is still quite a great book.) [1] https://www.bradrodriguez.com/papers/moving4.htm

HN discussionHow timely, I was recently looking for a very simple microprocessor made with standard logic and found this: http://www.bradrodriguez.com/papers/piscedu2.htm It uses four 74181s. I probably won't get around to building one, but it might be fun to write a processor simulator.
