  1. Sorry to hear the finger flick doesn't work :(. TIL about dewaxing (why anybody would even think that would help...). Sound targeting is IMO something only worth doing in an especially-exotic clinical setting in particular - like fMRI while anesthetized, or watching skin resistance or brainwave baseline or reading cortisol level directly out of the bloodstream or something. (I was actually trying to ask about how th…

  5. I love that kind of stuff! In college I wrote an assembler, interpreter, and simulator for an 8-bit chip, the 8048. Got a four-credit "A" :-D Later I read the C code for a Scheme interpreter -- Scheme 9 in Empty Space -- highly recommended! I bought the book. https://t3x.org/s9book/index.html

Fine to implement something. But I would wish that the language implemented actually looks like Lisp or Scheme. Currently this claims to be Lisp, but it is some strange version of it. Using a Scheme or Lisp has a lot of advantages: * one can compare it with other actually working implementations * there is already a wealth of material to learn from or where code could be reused * many books exist * the language actu…

  11. Anecdatum: I have maintained my web site since 1995 and have my own domain since 1999 ( http://t3x.org ). I have never had a "business" nor have I dreamt about big money. Give me back the old internet anytime!

  13. If you excuse the plug: Scheme 9 from Empty Space ( https://www.t3x.org/s9book/index.html ) explains GC, tail call elimination, continuations, macros, bignums, flonums, etc.

  17. LETREC requires mutability in the presence of lexical scope. Otherwise it works fine in the way you describe it. Using lexical scope, IS-ODD and IS-EVEN would be bound in parallel and (LAMBDA (X) (NOT (IS-ODD X))) would close over IS-ODD before it is bound, so it would be undefined when applied inside of the outer LAMBDA. Of course dynamic scoping will bite you earlier or later because of the upward and downward FUN…

  19. Victorian teletypes can be hooked to a serial port with a trivial adapter, at least enough to use CP/M and most single-case OS'es. Also, some programming languages have a setting to export code compatible with just Baudot characters: http://t3x.org/nmhbasic/index.html So, you could feed it from paper tape and maybe Morse too.
