What Hacker News says?

  1. I said "nobody does" because nobody can. It's a practical impossibility to run your own email today. It doesn't even matter if you have the necessary advanced technical skills. It's just not possible. https://cfenollosa.com/blog/after-self-hosting-my-email-for-... 3. That's true. The implementation differs on the country, for example in the UK it is enough to just show the annoying banner. Here in Spain you cannot set any tracking cookie (i.e. Analytics) without explicit consent. 9. Hello, author here. I knew that if this got posted to HN I'd need to explain myself more :) To address some of the top comments: - I clarified now in the article that the "Linux Laptop" is a Dell XPS 13" Developer Edition, which is marketed indeed as a Linux laptop, and the Ubuntu is marketed as "Ubuntu Dell". However, this is missing the forest for the trees, because only a couple of the issues I mentioned were rel…

  11. I wrote a bit about this in July, when the law was passed, if you want an opinion from a Spaniard: http://cfenollosa.com/blog/spanish-media-just-shot-themselve... 13. Funny, just a few days ago I wrote on the topic. Please allow me a self plug: http://cfenollosa.com/blog/living-in-a-disrupted-economy.htm... In summary, Luddism sells, though it's irrational and history usually proves it wrong. Technology mostly changes society for the better in the long term, even though it needs to disrupt old business models first.

  21. It's the same in that way, yes: both are federated protocols where you need to trust the owner of your server. But with Mastodon there are within-server interactions like the local timeline ( https://cfenollosa.com/blog/you-may-be-using-mastodon-wrong.... ) that have no equivalent in email, so if you decide to try to avoid this risk by self-hosting you're giving up something that a lot of Mastodon users really enjoy.

  23. "I have been self-hosting my email since I got my first broadband connection at home in 1999. I absolutely loved having a personal web+email server at home, paid extra for a static IP and a real router so people could connect from the outside. I felt like a first-class citizen of the Internet and I learned so much. Over time I realized that residential IP blocks were banned on most servers. I moved my email server t…

  27. I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, but I honestly believe you're missing the point. Bots will triumph not because of technical reasons, but rather because they are what people want. 29. There are many differences. Here's my take on it: http://cfenollosa.com/blog/bots-lack-metaphors-and-that-is-t... - Tech is ready for realtime natural language processing - Developers are getting bots right. - Plenty of APIs to build task-focused assistants - VC money - Popular demand
