Called a great overview and explanation of JPEG XL, a great article by a format creator, a handy article on fidelity versus appeal, and a better post on GIF alt

  5. One thing to note is that even when WebP did eventually get support in many places, it often look a very long time because there just wasn’t that much motive or interest to support it. So for years it was the weird format you’d accidentally download from the web and have little luck getting to work off-line. The non-exhaustive table linked below shows how long it took for different programs to support different imag…

  17. Ideally one would use human ratings. The author of the blog post did exactly that in a previous blog post: https://cloudinary.com/labs/cid22/plots Human ratings are expensive and clumsy so people often use computed aka objective metrics, too. The best OSS metrics today are butteraugli, dssim and simulacra. The author is using one of them. None of the codecs was optimized for that metrics except jpegli partially.

  23. Most JPEGs are slightly smaller as progressive. The drawback is rather that it’s slightly more resource-intensive to decode, and if you overdo it and split the chroma, you can get weird effects: https://cloudinary.com/blog/progressive_jpegs_and_green_mart...

  25. Yes, here's an update: https://cloudinary.com/blog/how_jpeg_xl_compares_to_other_im... TL;DR: We're now at "Draft International Standard" stage; soon we'll enter "Final Draft International Standard" stage and at that point the bitstream is effectively frozen and adoption can start. The officially ISO-published International Standard will take until first half of 2021, but the codec should be ready to use before that.

  27. In my opinion, the true contender to JPEG is JPEG XL. [1], where is has better quality than even AVIF at >0.5 bpp ( Bits per Pixel ) [2]. But the truly amazing next generation VVC manage to compress image with even better ratio than JPEG XL. Both JPEG XL and VVC is expected to be finalised in July/Augest. JPEG XL will be royalty free. VVC as usual is lots of unknown. [1] https://cloudinary.com/blog/how_jpeg_xl_compa…

Obligatory mention of FLIF [0], FUIF [1], pik [2], and JPEG XL [3] as well as Jon Sneyers FLIF & FUIF were created by Jon Sneyers - http://sneyers.info/ and are lossless but progressive, generating better resulting images at every step of the image download and brilliant mobile support (your browser can just stop downloading the image once it reaches the quality sufficient for the viewport).
