HN discussionThe irony is that the original vision of web components was what you wanted. See Alex Russels "a vision for the Future": https://web.archive.org/web/20121119184816/https://fronteers... --- start quote --- I think we're stuck today in a little bit of a rut of extensibility. We wind up leaning on JavaScript to get things, because it is the Turning complete language in our environment. It is the only thing that can giv…

HN discussionYou mention Ionic at the end, so I have to comment as the co-founder :) The first thought is on maintenance and support from Google/Facebook compared to someone like Ionic. One of the things people don't think about before it's too late is support, and Ionic is unique in mobile in that we actually make money from supporting our technology directly for customers. We have direct support available for our auth/security…

HN discussionGlad to hear Ionic and Capacitor worked great for you! On the Web View side, one other thing we’ve been working on is a mobile micro-frontend product called Portals that is focused on enabling teams to bring in web experiences into their native apps. We’ve seen some really interesting adoption of it from traditional native teams. We will be supporting Flutter and RN this year. It’s probably the best web view experie…

HN discussionHey there! I am the current Docusaurus lead maintainer, if you have any question let me know. You don't need to be Stripe and have a full engineering team working on your doc to make it awesome. Docusaurus is a content-centric static site generator based on Node.js and React. You can build a documentation site but also a blog, landing pages... The idea is that you just write Markdown files, and we generate a great d…

HN discussionNot defensive, apologies if it came across that way. I try to explain how Ionic is different because developers often aren't thinking about some of these non-technical/support things, but their boss or team leads might be. Everything is very "free" on the client-side of mobile but that has also created a situation where teams building really important apps aren't able to get any dedicated support or guarantees aroun…

HN discussion> Web apps are apparently able to achieve 60 fps in a Web View these days: https://ionic.io/blog/ionic-vs-react-native-performance-comp ... With a high end device. That's the problem. I can get 60FPS in my native app on a $50 Android phone if I use Kotlin/Java and Android SDK... I can't get that in a web view on the same device with a native wrapper using Ionic...

HN discussionFor a lot of (most?) apps not requiring native capabilities, I suspect it is. The web has come a long way since the days of FB ditching HTML5 in favor of creating React Native. Here are some recent comparison videos, using the exact same app example.
