What Hacker News says?

  1. There was at least one review from someone who switched from RethinkDB to Postgres, which includes a lot of pain points and the line: > A RethinkDB employee told me he thought I was their biggest user in terms of how hard I was pushing RethinkDB. http://blog.sagemath.com/2017/02/09/rethinkdb-vs-postgres.ht...

You're technically correct, but this case study was really eye-opening to me: http://blog.sagemath.com/2017/02/09/rethinkdb-vs-postgres.ht... They migrated from a RethinkDB cluster (similar to MongoDB) to a single Postgres server and the result was faster. And a single server is very large today, like 48 cores and 384 GB RAM. And speaking of Postgres HA management, master promotion, etc. there are several tools like…

  9. Probably LISTEN/NOTIFY. I explain in detail how I migrated from RethinkDB to PostgreSQL using LISTEN/NOTIFY + tons of additional work here http://blog.sagemath.com/2017/02/09/rethinkdb-vs-postgres.ht... I've continued working on this codebase, even pushing commits this week like this one: https://github.com/sagemathinc/cocalc/commit/c20a62446b6e43c...

  11. As mentioned, we have had collaborative editing with full history for Jupyter notebooks since 2014 in https://cocalc.com , which is open source by the way. We've written and rewritten this functionality 3 times now, culminating most recently with a complete front and backend rewrite of Jupyter from scratch for CoCalc. See http://blog.sagemath.com/jupyter/2017/05/05/jupyter-rewrite-... for more details. We also still…

  13. > AFAIK PostgreSQL has no such built-in functionality Postgres actually has basic pubsub via "LISTEN" and "NOTIFY". I was planning on trying out rethinkdb as a real-time database but found that approach instead described in this blog post: http://blog.sagemath.com/2017/02/09/rethinkdb-vs-postgres.ht... which also had a huge comment thread with related links(800+ upvotes): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13610146

  15. Thanks; here’s my blog post: http://blog.sagemath.com/2017/02/09/rethinkdb-vs-postgres.ht... Incidentally, http://www.lmfdb.org uses MongoDB (since maybe 2011) pretty heavily, as a result of me convincing them to do so after I read too much about MongoDB back then. It’s been painful for them, but it does still work well...

  17. I enjoyed reading this paper. I also recently talked with Chris Colbert about his new plans to use a CRDT approach to collaborative editing of Jupyter notebooks. This made me curious again about how CoCalc’s collaborative editing is related to OT and CRDT approaches, so I wrote up a blog post about that just now. http://blog.sagemath.com/2018/10/11/collaborative-editing.ht...
