  3. I cannot possibly imagine a world where Microsoft cannibalizes their Windows Server sales by creating a Windows Emulation Layer for Linux. Crossover is probably the best you'll get: https://www.codeweavers.com/products/crossover-linux Otherwise, if you only need Windows to game, I'd highly suggested PCI Passthrough so that you can use your GPU in a Windows VM: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PCI_passthrough_via…

  5. I worked on this problem for a bit. What's going on is the game relies on the OS-provided C runtime libraries ("msvcrt"-style things) to do its math. Wine's implementation of these libraries does not match Windows's perfectly. If all players are using the same implementation, then they will agree, and there are no problems, so people think it is working. But if a player on Wine tries to play against a player on Wind…

  7. This is really the case and has been for years now. This is a list of software I run or have run and that I keep checking on every 6th month or so. Most of them simply dont work, some have unstable limited features. https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/microsof... https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/adobe-cr... https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/corel-pa... https://www…

  9. > The UI is still better on Windows(basic utilities like File Explorer and Config Management is better on Windows). 5 years ago, we would be comparing old GNOME 3 or KDE Plasma 5 on X11 and Windows 10. I would be forced to agree. The Windows UI was better in many ways at that point. Today we have KDE Plasma 6.3 on Wayland and Windows 11. This is an entirely different ball game. It's hard to explain. Wayland feels li…

  21. A non-trivial number of contributions to Wine come from CodeWeavers (30%+ of all commits), which in turn is funded by its work on Crossover, Proton, and commercial agreements with other businesses. Wine would not be the project it is today without the contributions of CodeWeavers. Contributing cash to the companies contributing code is a perfectly adequete form of giving back. CodeWeavers released an annoucement whe…

  23. CodeWeavers's usage of Wine and other open-source projects has always been open-source. You can download our Wine fork source from our website[1]. We do use a small amount of closed-source glue to provide our installation magic and desktop integration. Wine switched to LGPL due to other proprietary forks. 25. The biggest commercial contributor to Wine is CodeWeavers: https://www.codeweavers.com/ Fantastic and very sympathetic small company which offers a next-next-finish installation of Wine. Excellent if you run a Linux desktop in a corporate environment that expects the ability to run Windows stuff.
